2026-27 scholarships grid

It has been a while since I last looked closely at the grid. It is remarkable how much injuries have skewed where my brain thinks players are from where their actual eligibility.

Hard to think of Ice, who played against Betts in AAU ball as a junior next year.

You should see the iterations of the grid that I post each year. The covid+redshirt grids were crazy. I'll probably post after all of this calms down.

Just a heads up that anyone even implying someone is/could/should/is rumored to transfer is going to fray my last nerve

That '28-'29 team would make a lot of noise all by itself...

Would Gandy qualify for as a Red Shirt? Benefits of doing so?

If WBB adopts the CFB redshirt rule of 4 games (or whatever), then Gandy could request it for 25-26, however as of now she is not eligible as she played in a few games.

She played several minutes at the beginning of the year which, under current rules, disqualify her for a redshirt. However, a rules change is under discussion and the feeling is that players like Gandy might get another year if the rules change goes through

She played in two games early on. If Geno didn’t think that she could redshirt then she would have played.

I think that is why seeing this one hits so hard. I am more acquainted with your grid where you easy the reader in gradually.

Not speculation, just a question on Ayanna and Ice - have we actually gotten confirmation they are returning? If so I missed that.

Sigh.

When Nan started this thread, my first thought was that Daniel Connolly had borrowed the grid from @BRS24
Well. I did a grid, and honestly not sure that I knew that DC was doing one? And then there was the covid craziness, and then add red shirts, and early entries, well, I just love doing spreadsheets. So yeah.

I'm sorry to see Yanna leave, a great teammate whose injury history will lead to an overcrowding of the frontcourt. She is making a good decision (just as Q made last year). Hopefully she remains healthy and is given a shot by a good school. I wish her the best and I am really sorry that it didn't work out for her at UConn. Good luck and love to Yanna.

The grid is going to need to be updated again with Ice Brady now entering the portal.

I am adulting today and fwiw I’m not updating mine until all the dust settles.

I hope Geno is hitting the portal hard. We need to add at least two players.

Would be good to get two one-year players and one longer-term player to have a balance across graduating classes. Let’s see what the coaches are able to do.

Wouldn't it be interesting if Geno didn't bring in any transfers this year? Sort of like a statement to potential recruits: we develop the kids who commit to us.

As the portal becomes an important source of talent, it becomes difficult to ignore. On the men’s side the championship was won by a team whose starters were all transfers.

Many 2nd and later year college players could be more capable than the best players in the graduating high school class. Also, some high school recruits do not achieve their potential. So the portal provides options - and it is here to stay..

As in prior years, there may be some chatter about whom UConn is targeting, however it's most likely that most of us won't know until it's official. Remember Evina Westbrook? That was IMO totally out of the blue, no pun intended.

I also think that Geno is one of those rare birds who really tries not to use the portal to over recruit both the current roster and any possible future recruits. I hope, anyway.

I agree: it's a whole new world. While Michigan won the men's national championship with five transfers as starters, UCLA wasn't too far behind on the women's side, with four of their top six (Betts, Kneepkens, Dugalic, and Leger-Walker) coming from the portal. Of the teams in the NCAAW Sweet Sixteen, not a single one had a starting lineup of five players who had started at that school. Only four—UConn, Louisville, LSU, and Texas—had starting lineups with 4 of 5 players originally recruited to that school.

I completely believe in developing the young women we recruit, but I think we'll be left behind if we don't continue to use the portal selectively and strategically to supplement the talent we recruit and develop.

I don’t get how this is a response to anything I wrote. Sure, the portal is here to stay, blah blah blah. That doesn’t mean Geno has to worship at that altar.

And sure, transfers are older and in some cases more developed than freshmen. So what? The whole point of building a team around developing talent is to actually develop talent. I won’t bother listing the benefits to team culture and playing as a team instead of a bunch of one-v-one games.

And I never said Geno shouldn’t look for someone in the portal. I just invited folks to consider the talent already on the roster.

Ok, so who wants me to post my updated grid, just in time for a transfer announcement? 🤣
How busy are you otherwise 🤔 🤣?
