If Hammon and the Aces keep playing this way and then keep throwing people under the bus, both she and Vargas might end up being in-studio "experts" in a shorter time frame than you might think.
Windows for championship teams don't last that long. At this juncture, it's not important to me whether Plum or Loyd would be helping the Aces more: Plum wanted out and Loyd is clearly on a (steady?) downward plane in terms of consistent play. Gray has been up and down and Young can't be A to A+ when teams realize that don't have to worry about Gray or Loyd like they used to.
I've stated this earlier (in the season) and think that:
- the front office simply isn't up to the task of finding the right kind/mix of players. Aaliyah Nye fell into their laps but out side of that, it's a revolving door of trades/pick-ups, draft choices and situations that don't work.
- Hammon has not shown any capacity to bring along/mesh these talents and keeps relying on the same old/same old. In the past, the gang could make it happen because they were finely honed and the powers that be could count on the start to get it together. Not so anymore.
I'm not optimistic, but let's see how it plays out over the course of the season. If they're stuck in this current rut, ownership should figure out who they want to run the ship in the offseason, going into the new CBA and an expanded league. Wilson, Young and Nye are all keepers. Who do they want to go forward with on both sides of the sidelines?
