I thought they played with a lot of effort for the first quarter but it quickly regressed back to individual play. Seattle feels like 5 players instead of one team, which is something to be expected at this point of the season with exception to the fact that they're a bunch of league veterans, many who have played together for years. I think their issues were masked by the Wings bigger problems.

Fair point. At this point in the season, a lot of teams are in that "individual" mode. Seattle did have those moments of "individual" ball and it darn near cost them the game. Like I said, I will be curious to see how they play against Phoenix and Las Vegas.
 
Fever threw away a very winnable game. More specifically, Natasha Howard. 0-4 FT in the fourth and a few bad FG misses. Bonner scoreless. Clark/Mitchell/Boston were elite tonight.

For the Dream both Griner and Jones were beasts inside. If both are dialed in they have one of the most physically imposing frontlines in the league. Griner scored at will over Howard in the 2nd
 
So--any hot takes after this one?

Do we still view the Fever as being head and shoulders above the league like Minnesota and Nueva York?

Is DeWanna Bonner cooked?
 
We also have to remember Dallas has played a grand total of two games this season with an almost entirely new starting lineup against arguably two of the three best defenses in the league in Minnesota and Seattle. Remember how bad Indiana looked last year when their first four games were against CT and NY? The fact that Arike has only average 13 attempts per game thus far (just one more than Paige) shows me she wants to have a more balanced offense--but agree they haven't yet found what the best shots for them in the offense are (Same for Carrington).

It's only 2 games, but she's been a lot less than stellar so far for Indy. Noticed she only played 16 minutes while Hull logged 29. Do we have any idea about the severity of Cunningham's injury? Really looking forward to seeing how she fits in with the Fever. If Bonner continues to struggle, maybe bench her and let Hull and Cunningham get all the playing time.
 
Bonner looks like she has zero juice left in her body, Fever really have to get Sophie healthy because right now they only have 1 wing in Lexie with the way Bonner looks.

Yeah. I kind of figure it is going to take Dallas a few games, like Indiana did last year, before things start to turn around. Or this is the Dallas team we will have for the season. We shall see.
 
Small sample size, but Aliyah Boston is playing like one of the top two or three centers in the league. For as good as she’s been her first two seasons, I’ve felt like there was still a leap to be made. Her and Clark could go down as the best PG/C duo of all time if they stick together beyond their rookie contracts.

This is all fine and dandy, but let's look at the flip side of this. Why are people drawing conclusions about Minnesota's and Seattle's prowess based on how they look against Dallas? Did people not see what Vegas did to them during preseason?

And going back to Indiana--are they no longer considered a contender because Atlanta beat them at home in only the second game of the season?

I mentioned earlier that she has to take a leap to the MVP tier if Indiana wants to compete for championships. Looks like that is happening.

As for the Boston/Clark PG/C duo, well, they'll need to win at least two titles together (and a few MVPs) to get into the discussion. Right now, Bird/Jackson and Gray/Wilson (depending on how people view A'ja) look to be lightyears ahead, and the latter pairing may not be done winning just yet.

Aren’t you drawing conclusions about the Wings based on a preseason game? There’s a new coach and different roster than last year

Boston had a couple of great coast to coast layups and she’s quickly become one of the better passing posts in the league. She’s also a tremendous screen setter. She and Clark are a perfect PG/C match for each other

Think her time with Unrivaled helped as well. She's off to a better start this season compared to last year.
 
Forgot to mention this after the Fever-Sky game. Noticed a couple times a Sky post player tried aggressively to back Boston down on the low block...and nothing happened. She didn't give any ground at all.

Am I saying that the Wings are doomed and don't have any chance to improve based on that one game? No, I'm not.

I made an observation (they looked bad) based on the game. I haven't drawn any conclusions from it.

Now, if I'd said that the Wings looked lottery bound based off of that one game, then you could say that I was drawing conclusions.

I was really impressed by her this season at ND. I feel like she's the kind of player every fan would want on their team (hard-working, high-engine, team-first, smart), and I love to see when those young women get rewarded with a chance to play in the W. Even though I'm sorry that someone(s) had to be injured for her to get a contract, I hope she can make the most of it.

I'm happy to stand up and draw that conclusion. I'm not certain that either the current coaching staff or the roster as constructed is capable of winning more than 10 games this year.

These athletes are so talented if you don't play defense you don't have a prayer. For Dallas victory on the defensive side is consistently exerting itself for three consecutive possession. Were it not for Chicago Dallas would wear the laughing stock jersey.

The rest of the league is so grateful they didn't get banished either of these two franchises and I am certain the last cuts for those two teams are eternally grateful as well.

I would put Dallas only marginally above Chicago. Based upon Chicago's first two games I'm more than happy to draw the conclusion that they will have a great deal of trouble winning. 10 years.

I was stunned when I took a look at the w stats this morning to see the windy city franchise averaging 58 points per game and their shooting percentage is overwhelming or underwhelming. They could add both Kiah Stokes and Bri Turner to the roster to increase theier shooting efficiency.

Back to Dallas I don't think it takes tremendous insignt or self-confidence to clearly indicate a conclusion: stick a fork in the Wing. It'll be the second stick as Chicago will challenge its fan base the way Phoenix has challenged it's fan base over the last six years.

The culture in Dallas took a long time to deteriorate. Changes in that culture doesn't happen overnight particularly if the past franchise star has to get hers.

Dallas is done. We should all send positive vibe to Paige - it's going to be a very long year.

I'm not saying that you're going to be wrong--because there's a good chance that you'll be right in the end. I'm just saying that we should wait for a larger sample size before drawing any major conclusions about any teams (whether they're contenders or the "bad" ones). The Lynx lost their third game of the season last year by 1--yet went on to become title contenders. This was after they spent the offseason getting drilled because they weren't able to land any big fish in free agency for the second straight season. Meanwhile, the Sun started out 9-0 (*see below) and didn't even make the Finals.

Chicago has a new coach who has a "deer in headlights" look, but he may have things figured out by the midway point. They're going to get pummeled by NY tomorrow. Does it matter? Not really, because they aren't supposed to win this game. They weren't supposed to win the Fever game--but they held it close until they ultimately unraveled in the 4th quarter.

Dallas may be a mess, but they didn't look so bad in the second half against Seattle. If their coaching staff plays the right players at the right times, they have a shot against teams they should be able to compete with regularly. I could see them coming away with a win if they had been playing against Golden State, for example.

*My gripe with WNBA scheduling is that it's designed to make certain teams look worse than they actually are while other teams get an inflated sense of their own ability. Dallas may not be good (understatement), but it's not because they get steamrolled by the Lynx in two of their first three games (assuming they go on to get pounded tonight). Likewise, I gotta see the Lynx play someone that didn't finish in the Top 2 in last year's lottery to draw conclusions about them.

This discussion is a perfect reflection of why it's so fun to be a sports fan. Back and forth, different opinions, different views it just makes the whole experience of engaging in sports so much fun.

I use talk to text when I put my entries in and my wife shakes her head. She says great I can't imagine anybody reads your nonsense


I feel so lucky to be part of the Bone Yard had to be part of a community that for the most part engages in good humored back and forth.

PS there's no doubt about where Chicago and Dallas will end the year.
