Wow. Out of nowhere! I like Jensen but hard to imagine she can make the team in 5 days.

Lauren Jensen is very much an off-ball guard whose main game is shooting.
So, makes me wonder if the Mystics aren't that gung ho on the other rookie shooting guards:
  • Lucy Olson is 1-6 and 1-8 in the two pre-season games so far
  • Zaay Green is 3-9 overall, but I'd forgotten she spent 7 years in college (in some capacity).
Maybe the Mystics brass/staff want to do a quick kick of Jensen's tires to see what she's got. Interesting in that Jensen started her career at Iowa before transferring to Creighton, while Olson graduated from Villanova and took a grad year at iowa.

It’s really encouraging to see. The Valkyries are very likely going to be at the bottom of the league this year, but this kind of fan support (added to the fact that the Bay Area is one of the nicer team locations to live in) will incentivize free agents to pick up the phone next year.
I bought season tickets and it was my first visit to the Chase Center. Just wow. We walked from BART (there is a streetcar line but it was a beautiful day). The entire Mission Bay area has been so transformed...even since the Giants' ballpark was built years ago. It was a long walk along the Bay Trail...walking/bike paths, urban parks, etc....not a cloud in the sky. Had a nice meal at a restaurant overlooking the bay, then across the street to the mobbed Chase Center. Used the "Clear" line (who knew) and and found our seats. I have to say I've never been a fan of all the rah-rah noise, etc. but they did a great job with the music, the video screens, etc. The game was great fun and afterwards, it was a smooth trip back to BART via the streetcar (free). Overall, I think the team is poised to do well and offering games in the summer is a plus for fans coming into the city.

Cuts so far today:

Caitlin Bickle was waived by the Connecticut Sun.
Kamila Borkowska was waived by the Connecticut Sun.

My thoughts are that Washington decided they needed to get a shooter in quick. And Jensen was a name that came to mind. I was thinking of some other shooters and have no idea what their status is. Overseas/injured/not interested. Abby Meyers came to mind as someone that has been with Washington before. And I can’t believe Sara Scalia has never gotten a look in the wnba. She has a beautiful stroke.

Jensen is a good shooter. And a borderline pro. I am not sure about the wnba because of how physical the league is. And I think she might struggle to guard. I also don’t think Washington has any more preseason games. So, it really is hard to imagine her making the team. But she can get a taste of what it is like. And that might be a good experience for her.

Exactly. I love Lucy, somewhat pun intended but she hasn't played great in the pre season games. She for sure can get to her mid range and create her shot at this level but it has to go in. She also has to be a bit better defensively. I wonder how the head to head matchups went.

Along similar lines, Abby Hsu, who got professional experience overseas last year but didn't last past the obligatory cup of coffee with the Sun.

Maria Gakdeng was waived by the Atlanta Dream.
Emani Jefferson was waived by the Atlanta Dream.

I'm with you on Scalia. Unless she's not interested, she deserves a tryout somewhere.

The Mystics pretty much blew up the franchise. They've always had at least some local blood. Shakira Austin is quasi-local, from about 40 miles away and a year or two at Maryland, but Walker-Kimbrough is the last really local player, and they let her go. Abby Meyers is from about 10 miles away and was hugely popular in her last year at Maryland; I'd love to see her in a Mystics uniform. It's important to put fannies in the seats in a rebuilding year. I assume they'll sell out most games, but it'd be really embarrassing to have empty seats in the sardine can.

Regular season starts with a great slate of games on May 16th.

Aces, Liberty, and Lynx are the elite teams again.

Connecticut and Dallas will challenge the Golden State expansion team for the bottom of the w.

Well Vegas has cc is the preseason MVP Wilson shows no sign of slippage.

Continuing our conversation from yesterday. This is interesting. I never really saw Jensen play a lot of point guard while at Creighton. But the injury to Amoore apparently is one of the reasons she was brought in.

Weird. You'd think that there were better options for point guards. Destanni Henderson comes to mind as an actual PG trying to find a spot. I wonder what she is up to. Or speaking of my Gamecocks, I wonder if Ty Harris could be traded. She has proven to be starter material and it's a shame she'll be backing up Bueckers.

If the Liberty have either Burke or Clark starting many games they are in serious trouble. Neither of them are really good.
They both need to get a lot better to help the Liberty.

I feel like Dallas is a small trade away from being good. Maybe ppl are down on them because of their game vs Vegas. But they have a lot of talent. Paige Maddy,Dijonai, Arike should be good enough to compete. I just worry about them defensively. But, like don't let Minnesota do something crazy like wave Dorka ( they got Jessica Sheppard back) and then Dallas signs and presumably starts her (a UConn fan can dream). I think Washington will be a lot worse than Dallas.

Though Stewie didn't play, I was surprised that Connecticut beat NY. Liv and Tina looked like a nice tandem. Liv had 15/7/0/1/2 in 17 minutes. Tina played 24 minutes and had 17/6/3/2/0. Tina is #1 in career rebounds and #2 in career points.

I'm bias but I think Liv is really good. Like 11 and 8 with great defense. I agree Connecticut looked good. I'm a big Mabrey fan, I just think any team with her leading is going to compete. Sheldon looked amazing. They are an interesting team.

My (grown) kids came back to fill the empty nest for a wedding reception today, so I only grabbed a snippet of the Conn-NY game.
However:
  • Agree that Tina and Liv looked good together and like the way Liv hit the boards.
  • Putting my Jersey and ND cap on, good to see Marina Mabrey play after/despite that lingering calf injury.
  • Mabrey (not surprisingly) was taking a lot of threes (like breathing), joined by Jacy Sheldon and Robyn Parks,
  • Lastly, that unassuming Lindsay Allen facilitated the team and dished out 7 assists in 22 minutes. She gets the ball to the shooters at the right time.
  • Look forward to seeing how Morrow and Rivers fit in here. My gut is Morrow will be in a solid rotation with TC and 'ONO.
On the Liberty side, no Stewie or Fiebich obviously. When is she coming back?
- Good to see Marine Johannes back...there's something about her game that makes you smile.

There’s two factors that players show as they develop: skills and self-assertion. In high school and college, talents grow faster than self-assertion. In the pros (and especially the W) self-assertion becomes more prominent than before. I think this may explain why talented players like Scalia don’t always catch on in the W. It is a league of very assertive personalities.

Conn looked surprisingly good, although Stewie's absence may have been a part of that. I thought Burke looked really good offensively
