The Sloot-Cardoso connection is going to be a problem for the league this season.
Chicago could be a good sleeper pick of Angel/Cardoso have solid step ups from a year ago. Atkins could be a great wing for them and Sloot is an excellent floor general. Biggest question mark is can Kia Nurse be an effective 3 and D type of player? She’s had a decent career but has never found the same shooting touch and consistency she displayed at UCONN.

Watching the Lynx/Sky game, I was glad that she gave some other players some minutes out there. Grace, Karlie, Alissa, and Marieme looked decent out there. We will see Chicago again in a few days.

She hasn't been the same since her ACL injury to me. Not playing during the off-season up until recently could be another factor. While I get she's building her media career, she may have benefited from it. She had a decent season with Athletes Unlimited, which I hope carries over to this season.

Thought you'd the quote from this post.

"Eight different players connected from deep in their latest game, a clear sign that this team has a range of options from beyond the arc. Among them was Kia Nurse, who knocked down three triples in her Sky debut."

They seem keen on the Sky's potential, especially from a 3-point shooting perspective.

Not surprising, as neither looked like a WNBA player.

The problem is that most of their guards don't look like WNBA players, either.

There were some superlative efforts that took place last night, but here are just a couple from young players that I wanted to highlight:

Oregon Ducks legend Deja Kelly for the Aces (15 points on 5/7 shooting, 2 assists, and a +11--so she may have been the biggest reason why a 10-point deficit became a one-point victory)

Former South Carolina national champion Laetitia Amihere for the Valkyries (20 points on 7/11 from the field and 2/4 from three)

I know it is only preseason, but I like the grit of the Golden State Valkyries squad. That was a pretty intense game. Kate Martin is something special. The way the crowd reacted to her every shot, make or miss. She is a joy to watch.
I love that the crowd was so into the game. I know the fans realize this is the first year for an expansion team with few, if any, stars, but that kind of fan support bodes well for the teams' future. Really hope Chen finds a home there...

I think Amihere has a breakout season. The fit was never there playing for Wright in Atlanta.

Fit was one thing, skillset was another as she relied on athleticism and driving to the hoop to score. She had the same challenges during the Olympics against stronger competition.

Her time playing in the WNBL during the off-season was a great decision on her part. Playing in that league helped Hillmon, one of her former team mates, expand her game. She even earned first team all-star honours if I recall correctly.

I agree! Every time I watched Laeticia play for the Dream, it seemed as though she was desperately trying to make a big play just to earn more PT. That led to some pretty awkward moments. I didn't agree with the new crew waiving her, but I can understand why they did.

Granted, it's only preseason, but she looks much more composed and ready to contribute. She's going to look fantastic playing in the Bay.

Sloot's presence alone makes this team much better than they were a season ago. She's made some INCREDIBLE passes to Angel and Kamilla (and Ariel/Kia) so far. I wish her the best. She really went through it last season with the loss of her mother (and her reduced role with the Liberty), but it looks like she's much happier this year. She's smiling a lot so far!

Four players in one fell swoop....whew. This is one tough, tight league to break into.
Let's see if some folks -- a la Ms. Sellers -- get a second chance on another team.
Otherwise, get pro experience just about anywhere one can, get better and come back next year when the league will have two new teams and a CBA that might allow larger rosters.
