2025 WNBA Pre-Season Thread

My girl Mackenzie Holmes is hooping right now. IDK what the stats say but she looks like a WNBA player. Like athletically. Seems like the year of rehab did wonders

Sun didn't shine yesterday. I know its pre season, but, if I were a Wing or Sun fan I might be worried. These two teams may combine for less than 27 wins.

I don't know where the Sun are going to find their offense. They can't rely on Tina Charles to do everything. While Haley Peters had a good game, I doubt she keeps that efficiency through the season. Anyone know why Sania Rivers and Aneesa Morrow did not get any playing time? I thought it was interesting that Madison Hayes, a UDFA, got 17 minutes while the draft picks got 0 minutes. There are a lot of head scratchers with that team makeup. I've got a feeling that the Sun are going to be at the bottom of the league by a wide margin. I've got a theory that they're tanking over the next two years so they can win the Juju Watkins sweepstakes.

Yep. . . . including the coaching staff.

There seemed to be no organization and while they played a ton of players who will not be in the league, I did wonder about how they will be defensively.

Morrow was out due to a knee issue. Rivers is away from the team for personal reasons. Think it was a loss of a family member.

Oh the other side of things, I was really happy to see Zia playing well for Seattle. I think their offense will be a better fit for her than her time with the Sparks. She had a really good off-season in Australia (shot 39% from 3) and I hope it translates to the W. She is one of those players who I believe will have a turning point in her career where everything clicks and I feel like she has a good chance to be Lexie Brown's main backup this season.

I was SO bummed when Holmes got hurt last year. I’ve thought for some time she’d make a good pro. The thing that she had coming out of college that other recent B1G post players haven’t is that she was a top-notch defender. So she’s one rung up from where someone like Gustafson was.

This is a great call. I was a super big fan of her in college, really the whole Indiana team the last 3-4 years. And ur right she was a DPOY and I know she has such a great passion for the game. I was mainly just concerned because she's not a great outside shooter. But more importantly, athletically I didn't anticipate her being as fast and spry as she was. She just had so many injuries particularly her final 3 years. It's still a hard team to make, I think they have like 9 locks (Sky, Nneka, Ezi, Gabby, AC,Dom, EWill, Lexi B, Li Yu) and will probably only hold 11, but I'm hopeful after her performance.

Bit more information from the Hartford Courant's report on the game:

"First-year head coach Rachid Meziane said the team is playing it safe with injuries at this point in the season, so they opted to rest a trio of potential starters. Veteran guard Diamond DeShields and first-round draft pick Aneesah Morrow were both ruled out against Seattle with right ankle injuries, but neither is a long-term concern with the first official game of the season less than two weeks away. Star guard Marina Mabrey also sat out of the preseason matchup with a right calf injury, the same issue that sidelined her for several weeks during Unrivaled. On top of the injuries, first-round draftee Saniya Rivers was not with the team after her mother died suddenly last week, and 2024 first-rounder Leila Lacan has yet to join the squad as she completes her overseas season in France."

My druthers: Taking that into account, my question would be if Morrow was held out for an undisclosed reason, as well. Heard it might've been a sore knee?

There's still two weeks to go, but Mabrey's calf issue has been lingering. Now, I got one of those a year ago and lost about a month and still wear a sleeve on it when playing, so I've got to wonder about how extreme this is. I'll be watching (what she wears) when she hits the floor.

The Sun, Mystics and Wings got beat. I see all three teams being at the bottom of their divisions along with the Valkyrie’s. However, the Mystics and Wings get the best shot at another First Overall Pick. That is unless they were already traded away.
It’s a two year combined record. Sacramento will get the 5th draft pick followed by either Toronto or Portland.

She was super underrated at Florida State. Plays bigger than her size, lengthy and athletic, excellent rim-runner, supreme shot-blocker who rang up multiple 8-block games in college. She’ll score points off Clark’s transition passes at ease. I think she’ll be a great pro. Ironically enough I think fellow FSU alum and Fever teammate Natasha Howard is a great player comp for what Timpson can work to be.

I started following Vinyl because of Boston and stayed because of Burrell. She and A. Edwards were the two youngsters who greatly profited from their experiences at Unrivaled and I am excited to see how that translates in the W.

I agree regarding Burrell's play during Unrivaled. She's had bad luck with injuries which hampered her ability to contribute. Looking forward to her season in the W this year.

Lynx, like probably most teams, still have a lot of players that will need to be cut to get to opening day roster. In their first exhibition game today, 3 rookies played, while four other rookies were DNP. Seems pretty likely none of those 4 will survive if they couldn't even get on the floor for a non counting game. Among them is the one I'm pulling for, Dalayah Daniels. Bummer.
