Avery Howell with Team Canada U19

I wasn't just talking about Team USA U19 when I alluded to the players' eligibility for next summer's U19 World Championship. On Canada Basketball's Instagram page, you can see her training with the Canadian Senior team. Jordan Lee (Texas), who also has dual nationality, also took part in a camp with Team Canada, but in her case, she chose to line up with Team USA U18 last summer. She was the most used player for the Team USA, Sarah Strong had the 9th most playing time for the team (?).

Three other players with dual USA/Canada nationality could join her, Agot Makeer, Taliah Henderson and Emilia Krstevski. I hope she will be part of the team. I mention this because I've been disappointed with Canada's representation, particularly at U19 level, in past years, Canada doesn't have enough depth to deprive itself of its best elements. I remember that Aaliyah Edwards didn't take part, even though she could always have been there. Of course, it's up to Canada Basketball to make its own decisions. I'd also like to see Syla Swords there, and I'm hopeful in her case, as her younger sister Savvy should be there. After a season cut short by injury, she's back in training.

That's why I replied because your post wasn't clear on that to me. I'm fully aware Howell trained with the SWNT as I noted in my reply.

And slight correction regarding Aaliyah Edwards and U19. She did participate in 2019, however she was with the Olympic squad in 2021 and wasn't part of Canada's U19 squad at that time.

I'm guessing the same has been the case for decades in pro sports regarding free agency; some players fulfill their contracts, while others make demands to be traded. Some become part of forced trades which they never expected.
I really don't think there's even the slightest comparison between college and pro sports currently in terms of roster fluidity and unpredictability of players leaving. Pro coaches don't have to deal with anything even slightly like their college counterparts are dealing with now.

I think it's worth bifurcating the portal into two sections....the transfers driven by NIL (the top players) and the other group of kids who just want more playing time.
I’d like to suggest bifurcating this thread into two sections. The first one would be the actual transfers, and the second would be the people complaining/commenting about the transfers. It’s getting too much to sift through to find the actual news.

I'm just glad that there's a link in the OP of this thread to refer to and see what players have entered the transfer portal, sorted by conference and school.

Give UConn a chance Avery. It’s close to Canada!
Granted, she's from the western part of Canada, but what the heck...it will all be one state if a certain person has his way.:)
I thought she was stellar for U$C this year. What's left of the ND team -- Hidalgo and Prosper -- have apparently been in touch with her about the Irish: Prosper knows her from Canadian National team duty.

And now Heckel in in the portal....whoa, there's a step change going on here....

Bingo
Any school would be lucky to get Howell, even UConn. If she’s leaving I can’t help wondering if she’s not the last.
Bingo!

Only good thing that an ND person did this month....;)
Of the two sites you mentioned in your OP, Dillon77, do you have any sense of why they’re reporting such different numbers of players in the portal? On3 has the number at 1,199 (!) and Raoul has 636. Both say they were updated today.

It's true what you say about Aaliyah Edwards' participation in the 2021 Olympics, it would have been difficult for her to go to the U19 World Championship which followed immediately after the games. But she wouldn't have been too tired, as she barely played a minute in her entire Olympic tournament. Canada Basketball decided to give her the Olympic experience. I respect that decision, but I wonder if it was the right one. That year, Merissah Russell and Maggie Besselink also missed out on the U19 World Championship, as did Latasha Lattimore. You'll understand why I mention that for the U19 championship, Canada's representation is sometimes disappointing. I don't think Spain will be without Iyana Martin Carrion and Awa Fam this summer, given that they are playing professionally.

For context, that 2021 U19 was a challenging one as a whole for Canadian Basketball.

For one, Russell was part of the pool being considered for the SWNT. Besselink sadly has been dealing with injuries throughout her career and wasn't available. Second, the FIBA requirements due to COVID had the entire U19 and Olympic squads sequestered for periods of time. It would have been challenging to meet those requirements in time for the tournament in Hungary.

Now for Canada Basketball's overall performance, that's an entirely different discussion that would need a separate thread or private conversation.

It seems that on3 is including every transfer announcement, where it looks as if Raoul's page only shows certain schools, however I'm not clear of the rhyme/reason for this. There have been times where I've looked for a particular school's recruiting page in a P5 conference, and it doesn't exist.

One of my favorite freshman. Good on her. I hope the new coaching staff and team can get her some help.
They did on the same day.

Kailey Woolston pulled her name out of the portal and decided to stay at Brigham Young. The 5'11" guard from Brigham Young who, as a freshman, started 32 of 32 games averaging 13.3 ppg and 3.4 rpg. She shot 47% from the field and from three-pt. range, which led D-1 in the NCAA's in 2023-24. She took this season off for a mission, so will have three years of eligibility. So now there will be two scorers.

I just don't know how anyone would choose to be in the coaching profession any more. You work hard to build a team...and then half of them leave. On a yearly basis. It's almost pointless now. Every day I inch closer to just quitting following college sports. There's so much about it now that I do not like. :(
This is one of how it feels to teach, minus the $ stuff, but work 100% and give your all to kids to be devalued many students and families and such daily

Howell leaving is puzzling, but not surprising. No one wants to be the “lower priority” player (Juju being the priority).

This is why coaches like Geno likely don’t just let a superstar player do everything every night. Especially in today’s world, there’s such a higher likelihood of players transferring out looking for stardom or a bigger role elsewhere. We haven’t had a rotation player transfer in a while (Amari and Inês don’t count as they weren’t rotation).
The puzzling thing to me is, both Howell and Heckel had to know they would be "low priority" players as long as JuJu was on the team. So why transfer out when a "starter" position is now available? Something else has to be the reason ... and it wouldn't be the fires. USC's campus isn't anywhere near the fire zones.
