She's still in HS. She played in the McDonald's AA game last night.
Duh. I was just assuming she and Howell were the same grade. Interesting dynamic with those two. When they played together, McGoughy was lighting it up, and college coaches were all over her. Then, she got hurt and had surgery, and in her absence, Howell suddenly started lighting it up, and the attention turned to her. Worked out great for both of them, and they always seemed to be supportive of each other. Looking forward to seeing how McGoughy does at UW.

They might be together again.

Surprising because she was up there with Kennedy Smith acting all rah rah go team go during their ESPN interview before our game, and then less than 48 hours later she's outta there. There really is no loyalty left. Makes me wonder what the incentive is to go to any school when you're being recruited out of high school. Perhaps just cutting to the chase and asking for that bag right off the bat is the most honest approach even if you've never played a single college game.
This one is a mystery. She was set for playing time, USC now a big media/final four contender. It's USC in LA. They are well funded.

I'm very curious to see where the grass ends up greener.:D

Kinda been an open secret that Howell and Heckel weren't too happy with their minutes and shot attempts all season. USC was more talented this season but Ivy League grad transfers from the season before understood their roles and were fine with standing in the corner watching Juju operate. Quite a few times I saw the freshmen look off Juju and wondered what's going on here.

I think you’re probably right but what’s puzzling is they got decent minutes. There have been cases of highly ranked freshmen riding the bench (see Betts, Lauren) but it seemed to me that Howell and Heckel were both major contributors.

If the rumors are true and Heckel enters as well I think USC is in trouble next season. With this year’s freshman trio and Jazzy Davidson I thought they’d still be elite even without Juju but I don’t think they can afford to lose half that quartet.

If Howell was unhappy with her offensive restrictions, I can’t imagine she would consider UConn.
Unless USC has got commits from some big fish in the portal currently, she would be the 2nd-3rd scoring option next year. Depending on what they do with the portal and replacing Juju.
She would be the 3rd scoring option at UConn as well, behind Azzi and Sarah.

The six-figure amounts being offered to these players are crazy. One SEC out-bid another SEC school by $300k for a player.
If multiple schools really are offering six figures, and your school is winning high-level recruiting battles, you might wanna have a seat for this…

I think there’s a big difference in being apart of an offensive system even as the 3rd option vs standing in a corner watching the Juju show. Not surprised she would be unhappy with that role, I think a lot of highly touted recruits would be and maybe she didn’t understand that at the time of committing.

yea I agree with you, not sure what the issue would be on Howell's end unless it was the role/usage and how she fit in Gottlieb's "offense" Heckel is TBD with her status(portal) but I definitely watched quite a few USC games where I thought they looked considerably better with her running the show over TVO.

A little surprising, only in that it is not rocket science to see what the JuJu show, or Hannah show, or Latson show, or upcoming Miles show and Chavez show will be like.

My thought for Heckel, Howell and Smith was that they knew what they were joining and the excitement of USC, bigTV, final4, potential championship was pretty compelling.

JuJu also quite a nice kid. There is plenty of room for teammates to get 10-15 points and be factors on D. They just won't be centerpiece.

Quite intriquing to watch this all play out.

Yes - and no. Gottlieb's theory of game plan was, and I quote, "let JuJu be Juju." That would not have flown with Tara at Stanford, Geno at UConn, or Dawn at SCAR. You earn your playing time at those schools, or you transfer (see Betts, Lauren; Rivers, Saniya; and half of UConn's late 2010s classes).

I personally thought Iriafen regressed this season as she stagnated offensively and did not get appreciably better on defense. And I was shocked to hear her say in an interview after their Sweet 16 win, "this season has been so challenging for me." Between $700k in NIL and the bright lights of LA, what was challenging? Maybe, just maybe, an unhelpful coaching dynamic and the recognition she was not actually growing as a player.

Can't speak to Heckel or Howell, but I have always thought Gottlieb is a bad choice if you want to develop as a player. Nice coach and a great human being, though.

Could Howell be Kneepkens' replacement at Utah? or she may team up with McGaughy in Seattle.

I wouldn't be surprised if Heckel leaves as well. I'm a huge fan of K9. She could reunite with Koval perhaps.

Some of what you guys are saying is why I never understood Jazzy’s decision to commit to USC. They have Juju. And they have Kennedy Smith. Jazzy has a similar game tbh. Plays the same positions. So, I didn’t understand why she would want to be behind the both of them for two years. Juju’s injury may change the math for her a bit. But I was extremely puzzled at the time.

Someone brought up a good point. Howell going into the portal may be a sign usc has landed someone out of the portal that plays the same position.

Per skim mulkey, it was known 4 weeks ago

Howell leaving is puzzling, but not surprising. No one wants to be the “lower priority” player (Juju being the priority).

This is why coaches like Geno likely don’t just let a superstar player do everything every night. Especially in today’s world, there’s such a higher likelihood of players transferring out looking for stardom or a bigger role elsewhere. We haven’t had a rotation player transfer in a while (Amari and Inês don’t count as they weren’t rotation).

I think this current year may be the last fun year for me watching women's basketball. Best coaching will not matter. Who has the most bucks to throw around. I am getting really scared waiting to see if anyone on our team announces after the season that they got an offer for $2,000,000 and could not afford to turn it down. Just holding my breath. But even if we keep everyone, I see a lot of schools with big bucks who will grab all the best players from all the other teams. No mid major will keep their best players. Even the schools in the SEC or Big10, if you are not a top school with big bucks say good bye. See Vanderbilt. The only good news seems to be a lot of players are fed up with the stars who insist the game is about them. See what is happening at USC and Notre Dame. I think that is what Paige has been fighting against her whole time at UConn. It can't be about me, it has to be about the team. That is how you build lasting friendships and happy teammates who all work together. We get players like Diana who is great, but averages around 17 points, or Breanna who averages under 20 and Paige who is under 20. When you have 5 really good players on the floor, no one should average over 20 for the season. Only in crunch time does Paige now realize she has to take over, especially if Azzi is having an off night shooting. I really think Paige would love it if Azzi shot 10 for 12 from long range in our upcoming game and Paige scored 12, as long as we win. That is what most makes her great. Hopefully everyone on our team loves their teammates, loves the atmosphere, and of course most all they love the Boneyard and our support and outstandingly helpful criticism and other comments and no amount of money could lure them away.

Here is where my old self wonders what the kids are thinking: big recruiting classes with established programs where there are already "stars" on the team. Dawn has done a great job so far of keeping the young ones patient and waiting their turn where other programs have struggled to keep theirs from transferring.

If you want to be the star of a program that's fine, there are plenty to choose from without All-Americans or all conference players who have good coaches and facilities. But to leave after one season because you didn't get enough touches, minutes, or you perceived your role to be more limited than you'd prefer is just crazy. At least give it two years and if the writing is on the wall at that point, go for it.

This idea of Miles to UConn has been posted in both “clickbait” publications (SI, Sporting News, Yahoo Sports) as well as legitimate newspapers (NY Times & USA Today). As best I can tell it’s totally based on speculation that makes the case that with Paige moving on, Miles would be an ideal replacement as the Huskies next pg.

Yeah, the theory is a head scratcher but not surprised people are putting it out there. Was confused by the way the post framed the question.

Even if the article was semi-true, Miles wouldn't be a good fit here, given her "hero ball" mentality that developed at the end of the season. Geno would not put up with Miles driving the lane on a 6'2 shot blocking big instead of kicking the ball out. Or trying for flashy, highlight layups when the team is down 4 in the last quarter.

Unless he can knock that mentality out of her, she would not fit in here as a Paige replacement per se.
