2025 Transfer Portal

One of the Heckel news tweets said thus was the 4th USC transfer. Howell is one. Who are the other 2?
Aaliyah Gayles was the first announced, but I haven't heard who the fourth was.

Why? It doesn’t raise a red flag that EVERYBODY else on her team is leaving? Don’t you know how particular Dawn is that she brings in? Read the room.
Because she’s by far the most talented.

I just read on The Next that 5 UVA players have entered the portal. I’ve read every one of these posts and only recall seeing one of the names (Lattimore). So I’m assuming that not all portal entries make it to the Boneyard - seeing as how there are probably 1000 by now, I guess that makes sense! BTW - Noyan was the only other one of the 5 who started regularly this past year. But losing 5 adds to my worries about coach Mox.

According to Talia: last night there were 1100 more names in the portal than signees. How many of these young women will land at other schools, and more importantly, how many will retain college scholarships? That seems scary to me.

Here's something that just occurred to me: Do you think the LA wildfires might have influenced the USC freshmen's decisions to enter the portal? All the speculation about NIL money, wanting to be in a more balanced offensive system, etc., definitely makes sense, but part of me wonders if living through a natural disaster that could easily happen again during their time in school might make a kid from Canada/Idaho or New York wish for (literally) greener pastures. Does that sound totally bonkers?
Another heavy loss for USC

USC continues to be hit hard. It's now Kayleigh Heckel, ESPN HoopGurlz prospect #13 who enters the portal, after Avery Howell, prospect #16 preceded her. USC had to convince three top players of the 2024 class, now only Kenndy Smith (#6) remains. All three are eligible for next summer's U19 World Championship. For my part, I think that spending so much time on travel, being a California team that plays in the Big 10, is perhaps not totally unrelated to its decisions.

Transfer from Auburn. She arrived from China for the second half oof the season, and by the end, she was playing very well.

I am biased of course, but I think she might find a comfortable home at Cal. Good, supportive cultural community here beyond the court and the Bay Area. She sounds like a very skilled player. Former Cal player Yue Chen had a similar background. She was first ever NCAA D-1 player from China and though not as talented, she was happy at Cal and went on to get her MFE at Haas. I've seen her at a lot of Cal games since she graduated but she may be back in NYC now... Q&A: Yue Chen, BS 20, MFE 23, pioneering Division 1 women's basketball player, aims to be a Triple Bear - Haas News | Berkeley Haas

I just don't know how anyone would choose to be in the coaching profession any more. You work hard to build a team...and then half of them leave. On a yearly basis. It's almost pointless now. Every day I inch closer to just quitting following college sports. There's so much about it now that I do not like. :(

What other profession pays $1 million a year for female sports?

I believe they alternate travel weekends. Not that that's a lot better. Tho teens are a lot more oblivious to things.
I think they also have one 3-game road-trip, so it ended up as 4 trips to the midwest/east.
I'm guessing they'll also play more local non-conference games in anticipation of travel later in the year. For one, they can now play their old PAC rivals for quality-non-conf games that aren't too far.
If I read correctly somewhere, the B1G spreads the games out, you have to have 2 days off between games. This makes the travel even more awkward, but accounts for gaps between when teams played (for example) UCLA and USC.

Is it worth it? Like mentioned previously in this thread, some very high profile men's coaches walked away from the game, when they had plenty of years left they could've kept coaching. They were getting paid a lot more than $ million a year. Obviously for some the answer is "no" it's not worth it, regardless of the money.

Some of his comments are annoying but theres no doubt Raoul does a fabulous job with maintaining these lists.

I think in a lot of cases the sales pitch didn’t match up to the delivered goods. Don’t pitch starter minutes and then deliver bench/role player minutes. Be up front. Lies may get you off to a fast start, but reality is undefeated.

If this relates to the USA roster, I don't think Howell can play for them. She's been part of the Canadian Basketball pool for some time and was an alternate for the Olympics squad last summer.

I'm guessing the same has been the case for decades in pro sports regarding free agency; some players fulfill their contracts, while others make demands to be traded. Some become part of forced trades which they never expected.

Players transferring in college is now part of life. For every coach who quits due to this, there is some other coach just waiting to take their place and salary. So, it's not "worth it" to everyone; but it's "worth it" to enough coaches that vacancies will always be filled.

Weather or natural disasters could play a role in a transfer’s decision. However, it is probably near or at the bottom (if anywhere) on their attribute list. A few recent examples: Angel Reese transferred to LSU, ground zero for Gulf Coast hurricanes. Beers transferred to Oklahoma in the middle of tornado alley, Lara Somfai selected Stanford despite its being close to the fault line. I imagine NIL $$$$$ and playing time are more likely to influence their decision.

That’s 4 for USC. Plenty o room for more transfers in.
Down to 8 players plus injured Juju.
USC looks like a perfect spot for Miles from Notre Dame with Kiki gone. They’ll be money for her because that’s probably what she’s looking for the rumor of Connecticut seems like a false hope situation. If she is hunting a national championship attempt, then Connecticut actually becomes a possibility, but the money would be on the West Coast.

Avery Howell with Team Canada U19

I wasn't just talking about Team USA U19 when I alluded to the players' eligibility for next summer's U19 World Championship. On Canada Basketball's Instagram page, you can see her training with the Canadian Senior team. Jordan Lee (Texas), who also has dual nationality, also took part in a camp with Team Canada, but in her case, she chose to line up with Team USA U18 last summer. She was the most used player for the Team USA, Sarah Strong had the 9th most playing time for the team (?).

Three other players with dual USA/Canada nationality could join her, Agot Makeer, Taliah Henderson and Emilia Krstevski. I hope she will be part of the team. I mention this because I've been disappointed with Canada's representation, particularly at U19 level, in past years, Canada doesn't have enough depth to deprive itself of its best elements. I remember that Aaliyah Edwards didn't take part, even though she could always have been there. Of course, it's up to Canada Basketball to make its own decisions. I'd also like to see Syla Swords there, and I'm hopeful in her case, as her younger sister Savvy should be there. After a season cut short by injury, she's back in training.

Is the portal really an option??

I said in previous post her mom is shopping her daughter around threatening the portal if they don’t give her a lot more money or if another schools gives 7 figures.
