2025 MLB Playoffs Thread

You may laugh at this but don't think for a second that Manfred won't try to add the ghost runner in the playoffs.

That was incredibly unimpressive baseball. A bunch of journeymen pitchers shutting the teams down, no fundamentals moving the runners over. Gleyber Torres is the #2 hitter for the Tigers for crissakes.

I watched that whole game, I can’t think of a way to describe it that fits less than “unimpressive baseball.”

A couple guys missed their bunts and a bunch of incredible pitches and defense got the teams out of jams.

I can’t imagine calling that game unimpressive but I guess we’re different.

Yep. Some people know the sport, some don't.

Lolol we agree there.

I’ve played and coached and watched my whole life, you enjoy making everything a hot take. So yes, some people don’t know what they’re watching.

Sorry for bothering you by disagreeing with your scalding take.

Def some poor execution on manufacturing runs.

The way they teach pitching these days is so advanced - in terms of how they measure data points, teach mechanics, use the funnel. Not sure that's right.
I'm sure this is true to some degree. We have a lot more information now, better technology, better training regimes, nutrition, etc. But I think that's also the problem. We don't get to see guys pitch into the 7th and 8th inning anymore because we have data to tell us you're better off going to the bullpen at that stage. We don't see as many batted balls fall in for hits because the defense knows based on science and data exactly where to position itself. And the velocity of modern pitchers, while impressive, has led to several unintended consequences that have greatly diminished the value of the position and put them at far greater risk of injury.

I don't miss watching Jamie Moyer. I respect the guts and guile it must have taken for someone with his limitations to last that long in the majors, but I never found guys like him particularly fun to watch.

I miss watching a guy take the ball who knows he's going to be out there 7 or 8 innings. I miss watching a guy who could probably dial it up to 98 or 99 have to get by with 94 or 95 because he knows it's a marathon and not a sprint. I miss watching the best pitchers figure out different ways to get you out in your 3rd or 4th at bat rather than facing you once or twice and passing the buck to the next bot throwing 100.

It's not fair for me to hold this against the current players because they don't have any choice in the matter. A guy like Skubal is an incredible talent who's probably more dominant and fun to watch throwing 95 pitches than he would be throwing 115. But the sport itself has suffered because the craft has been diluted. It's a good example of how having more information and smarter people running the show doesn't necessarily translate to better entertainment.

Well can’t disagree with you there. Analytics has taken the soul out of a lot of sports. Yes, also loved that ace that would be able to “pitch” his way deep into a game with guile, was always a duel. Baseball was better when you know it’s two gladiators going inning for inning (what made the US open so fun, what makes two top QBs going so fun).

These days analytics tells a team that when pitcher x gets to this pitch count x they lose effectiveness and gain injury potential.

The Aurora Borealis series, the north dominates. Hope Seattle sports those seafoam unis in this one, or the classic blue/yellow. Give me Seattle as a first time AL pennant winner for those fans.

I’m happy with that…but I love Toronto as a city and they haven’t exactly been the 90s Cowboys so I’ll be happy either way.

As long as they’re playing the Brewers.

Nah. They have some likeable players. For me it's more than Milwaukee has never won a WS and Seattle's never been there, so those two are my rooting interest. Plus, as I've said before, I love the way Milwaukee plays.

The Yankees used to have likable players too, but they as a whole were annoying.

They absolutely are the new evil empire. They can lose every game for all I care.

As a Yankee fan I don't like the Dodgers but I do respect their ownership. They actually make winning championships a priority at all costs. The Yankees care more about staying under the luxury tax than a World Series they are satisfied with making the playoffs.

I get the Yankees being hated but do any non Yankee fans really hate Hal, gee I wonder why that is. Why do ya think Yankee fans liked George and non Yankee fans hated him, because he won championships.

As a person I never was a fan of the Boss but he made winning championships a priority you couldn't deny his passion of winning, Hal is probably a better person but doesn't care about winning a World Series.

As a longtime Red Sox fan I can truthfully say I have no hatred towards Hal or even the Yankees. I want to see the Sox beat the Yanks but the hatred I once felt for guys like ARod is long gone.

I totally understand that, I know Redsox fans are fed up with their ownership as well not investing enough in the team while hiking up ticket prices. Although it was fun baseball seeing the Yanks-Sox go at this year the rivalry isn't what it used to be.

I do wish the ownership of both teams cared as much as the fans.
