Reality Check:

We are an independent.........decidedly not with the cache of Notre Dame.

While Bowl eligible, we are way behind the pecking order of a number of mediocre teams in the Power 4. Their bowl tie-ins may well preclude us from a bowl invitation. We need to accept the fact that our bowl invitation prospects rely heavily on P4 teams failing to gain bowl eligibility.

That's life. We need to live with it as long as we pine for P4 membership.
That is just nonsense. We are going to a bowl. Talk to AD Dave. He will tell you that. These bowl tie-ins are not binding contracts. More gentlemen’s agreements”. Last year Fenway wanted UConn because we were local, interesting, and would bring fans. We brought way more than they expected fwiw. They did what they needed to do to make that happen. We also brought a decent crowd to Myrtle Beach. I wouldn’t be shocked to see us up against another ACC team. Those are attractive matchups for tv and fans alike.

Our last two bowl appearances have been vs an ACC school in Boston and vs a very good Marshall squad.

I’m not sweating our opponent in an 8-4 type year.

They are contracts , but some conferences don’t fill all of their bowl slots. These are generally bottom feeding bowl games like Fenway last year or Myrtle Beach. We are not going to the Pinstripe or any bowl on that level or higher.

If we go back to Fenway I’d be perfectly happy. UConn Nation showed up in droves and it was a great day. Only downside is Fenway is a tough configuration and views are challenging in many places. They need to up the merch situation also.
Wow...4am post....you get an A for effort. And FWIW we had a great time at the Fenway Bowl last year. I'd rather go watch a game in a warm climate, but we saved a couple grand overall and it was great.

Battling shingles which absolutely sucks. Can’t sleep. Just hoping the antivirals work and I can get to the Duke game. Priorities, right?

Curious if you got the shingles vaccine?

We loved Fenway and had a great time. I know we would not have been able to go to any other bowl location other than Yankee Stadium and it was a great time for the family. Saw many people we knew at the game who were probably in similar situations so UConn Nation is definitely a huge plus. There were some folks near us decked out in their Bruins gear which led me to believe, there are some sports fans who just want to see live competition and are thirsty for a decent FBS program to root for. 😜

OOF....sorry to hear that....I had a weirdly mild case of shingles fifteen years ago....never got much of a skin outbreak, but had all kinds of abdominal and side pain....doctors couldn't figure it out for over a week until a nurse noticed several "pock marks" in a line and they tested...voila.
Needless to say I went and got the shingles vaccine a couple years ago...I've seen some people with unbelievable outbreaks from shingles and I don't want that shizzle. Feel better...hope you can get to the game Saturday!

I think the way fans showed up last year at the Fenway Bowl will go a long way for us in a bowl selection this year. The bigger bowls want teams that bring fans. We brought fans last year. Sure it was a short drive, but we showed up in force! I’m sure bowls will take note of this when looking for teams to select in December, assuming they are not required to take a team.

Thanks, man. Antivirals working but half my face looked like the elephant man. Eye swollen shut. Real mess. But things are like 100% better other than I still scare small children with blisters all over. This just totally sucks. For the rest of you “I don’t need a shingles vaccine” heroes like me, trust me, do the shots.

My deepest sympathy/empathy. I had shingles misdiagnosed and caught late that went over my scalp to my forehead; absolutely the worst thing ever. Three levels of pain, the excruciating surface pain of the open wounds, the debilitating nerve pain that traveled back and forth just under my scalp, and the thudding headache. I've had every shingles vaccines since in fear of it returning.

Yuck!

ESPN predicts either Myrtle Beach vs Troy or Gasparilla vs Utah State.

Both awful bowls and both before the holidays and on a Friday.

We should do better than either of those bowls but I know we have our hands tied not being in a conference.

If we close out the season strong, I wouldn’t be too worried about our bowl/opponent. Don’t think we’d get stuck in a bowl like that

Earlier in this thread, the discussion was focused around if UConn would make a bowl at 6-6 and no conference tie-ins.

Given that we now have 7 wins (including a duke win), should we still be worried about this possibility?

Is it metaphysically impossible for us to be excluded as we sit here today? No. But the odds that we are shut out are such that I would spend my time worrying about slightly more likely possibilities. Like someone you love being killed by a flower pot falling from their balcony onto their head.,

7-5 is probably gauranteed some low tier bowl against a middle of the back Sun Belt, C-USA team. I think 9-3 will get us at least a mid level P4 team in some middle tier bowl game. Which is beyond anything we would have excepted 4 years ago.

My guess is UConn will play in the Fenway Bowl again. Why? Most likely, the SEC will get 4 or 5 schools into the CFP which means the SEC won't fill all of their bowl slots and some attractive bowls will need schools so there will be trading of slots between bowls. I would think the schools to take the SEC slots would be AAC or ACC schools.

I've thought about it and realized that bowl organizations might want to see Fagnano and Bell in a bigger game because of how great they've been (a more active fan base doesn't hurt either). That consideration could put us in a relatively higher-profile game against a quality opponent.

I just want a P4 opponent. A G5 opponent offers little upside with a win and potential hurt with a loss. A P4 opponent (even if they are an objectively worse team than the G5 opponent) looks great with a win and negative impact is mitigated by the "Power" status of the opponent.
