No one wants to work for a school that has unrealistic expectations while having to fight with schools like Ohio State, Michigan, USC, Oregon etc. for the B1G title. The fanbase is also incrediblely impatient. This kind of stress can age anyone by 10 years just thinking about it.

I wonder if PSU will end up going after rethreads like Brian Kelly etc.

One comment I read was Penn State is in danger of becoming another Nebraska.

Penn State dumping Franklin is entirely defensible for multiple reasons. Not winning the big games, not getting the QB spot right in spite of multiple top recruits. Other that the bad losses this year, I think the straw was seeing the QB he ran out of town for his anointed QB that didn't improve at all, having a Heisman worthy season for Missouri until he got hurt.

Penn State dumping Franklin without a known, locked up successor or even a plan is completely indefensible.

They are going to pay for this mistake at least for the next two seasons or longer if they miss on the eventual coach.

Unless they are waiting on an NFL assistant or lure some big name out of retirement, they should give the job to Smith and wait for next year's crop of options. They can get a new AD in that time too.

The problem Penn State has now is everyone is their 5th choice. Even if some of the earlier choices were never really seriously offered. That makes everything that much more difficult i think. Unless he gets off to a very fast start it becomes almost an automatic lightning rod for the fan base. Plus it is tougher to recruit and many other things are more difficult.

Napier is not a bad coach. The problem is that FL has a brutal schedule with the SEC + Mia + FSU. And fans with high expectations.
FL was just a bit too high for him. I think he could do very well at Tulane.

My biggest fear is the Penn St situation completely blows up and they are looking for a new AD.
