2025-26 Coaching Carousel

This will not end well for LSU. What’s next Kelly will be charged for fraud by the state of LA to try to argue termination for cause? Deja Vu of Ollie’s termination.
Ollie had the Union on his side. Helped him alot. Doubt that Coaches at LSU are in the Professors Union. (can't remember the acronym)

Yes but also no. It can definitely work and work well. But look at our last two seasons. We were a run heavy team last year with a great offense, but this year we're lighting it up with the passing game and the results are just better.

You need a top tier defense to win with a top tier run game. You can get away with a mid defense if you have a top passing offense. If we had last years defense with this years offense we'd have only lost a couple games over the course of two seasons
I'd argue you can't at Florida or Penn St with current state of the SEC and Big 10

I was making a point when you provide a guarantee contract you need to live up to your responsibility in paying it when things do not work out instead of trying to find a sleazy way out of paying it.

That wont help it make sense to me. I would need to understand the nature of his PSU contract.

Why not take a modest salary from VT and keep collecting from PSU? And make VT use the extra money for NIL and assistants?
Regardless of how good he is or might be at the job, he just found out how quickly things can go south. Why risk taking a modest payday when you can get paid as much as they are willing to give you? Because he's got the PSU money to fall back on? If there is a clause that he needed to look for work then there is probably a clause that if he gets fired from a future job then the PSU payments stop.

Then Penn St. brings about a lawsuit that the VA Tech salary was manipulated at their expense and things get messy for allbody.

We should have brought him on staff here and paid him fair market value for UConn and Penn. St. would petition to get us into the B1G instead of having to pay him like 12M a year. Just crazy enough to workkkkk.

I think Virginia Tech did a great job hiring Franklin. Virginia Tech is centrally located to the 3 schools he spent most of his college career, Penn St., Maryland, and Vanderbilt, so he has strong recruiting ties in the area. He won at Vanderbilt in the SEC and turned around Penn St. after the sanctions. He went to the CFP semis LAST year and was only 1 score away from going to the championship.

Virginia Tech realized they had fallen behind financially and they just upped the investment. A clear top 3 job in the ACC. When VT joined the ACC, they won 10 or more games in 7 of their first 8 seasons.

I agree it's a good hire, but note it was Bill O'Brien who stabilized PSU after the scandal.

Oooph. That's a tough way to begin, if this season is any indication

1) This is a great hire for VPI
2) That schedule is sneaky bad, actually.
  • Clemson losing Klubnick with very little behind.
  • @Miami is always overrated - no fans
  • G Tech loses King who is that team
  • None of the others register that much

It is the ACC. Most of the teams will be mediocre relative to rest of P4. Miami has the resources to have a good team. What holds Miami back is their coach who is terrible at game planning. However he can recruit.

Bit more on Franklin/PSU offset language: Penn State Could Owe James Franklin Very Little of Buyout

“Franklin and Penn State could have negotiated a settlement after his firing, but the terms of his 2021 contract extension, obtained by Front Office Sports, read: “Should Coach obtain such applicable employment prior to the date this Contract would otherwise have expired, the University’s obligation to make payments to Coach … will be offset by the total compensation earned by Coach from such applicable new position through the end of the otherwise unexpired term of this agreement.”

In other words, whatever new salary he receives from his next job will offset what Penn State owes him in a buyout. And Franklin is obligated to search for a new job, according to the deal. That language, known as “duty to mitigate,” states: “Once terminated, Coach is obligated to diligently search for and make a good faith effort to obtain another position appropriate for his skill set (i.e., coaching, scouting and broadcasting only) and to provide the university upon request with evidence that he is seeking such employment.” Franklin is also required “to make good faith efforts to obtain the maximum reasonable salary” at his new job.

He's probably going to have back to back 10 win seasons while beating their rivals. The problem is that in that league, you clearly need to have 11 wins to get in to the playoff. They simply aren't going to get a pass for any close losses, and he finds ways to play a lot of close games.
