2025-26 Coaching Carousel

He took a team with a nationally renowned identity as a smash mouth offense that can run the ball down your throat. While they weren’t the best overall team in the country, they belonged in the conversation for top rushing offense in the country. He blew that all up to run an offense just like practically everyone else. Never understood that decision.

Because smash mouth football is dead. And under chryst they were not in any conversations.

I'm kinda with O'Brien on this one.
It seems the fan base based on comments is split. hey, every coach has his moments and the fans want to see the coach fired up. it was odd because on one hand, I don't think the reporter said anything about being "down." Fans are obviously concerned about the sheety season. at the same time, "down" would be putting it lightly. fans are outright angry!

I certainly agree the game has largely evolved away from that old school style. And you make a good point-for sure chryst seemed to have stalled out. But what comes to mind for me-like with many other cyclic things, as folks abandon something, it can find new life after some time or still thrive in isolated pockets.

As teams “forget” the nuances of stopping a traditional run game, we have seen teams start to bring back fullbacks and use H backs as full backs with different angles of attack for their lead blocks. A limited number of triple option teams still find success out there because opponents aren’t prepared for that style of play and teams built with a front 7 best equipped to make plays in space aren’t necessarily equally prepared to handle a traditional running attack.

That’s one of the things I love about football-the continual evolution of how to scheme things up!

-> It’s probably just a matter of time — maybe weeks, but maybe just hours. That’s the position Norvell put himself in by losing nine ACC games in a row, getting off the schneid last week against Wake Forest, then face-planting against a Clemson team that has been almost equally disappointing this year.

Here’s a stark framing of the situation in Tallahassee: In the last 12 months, UConn coach Jim Mora has more wins over ACC opponents (North Carolina, Boston College, Duke) than the Florida State coach. <-

smash mouth would work better now given how small defenses have gotten.

They've become, what's that word...

Sounds like they are happy to pay it.

It appears that LSU is not that happy to pay it.

This will not end well for LSU. What’s next Kelly will be charged for fraud by the state of LA to try to argue termination for cause? Deja Vu of Ollie’s termination.

Of course they are going to try and negotiate it down.

They tried that, and Kelly said no.

So this is plan B by LSU. While it’s laughable, I suppose every FB coach is vulnerable to having done something shady. But unless someone (the fired AD? The governor? The provost?) is psychic, it’s hard to claim they knew of any transgressions before they fired him.

It may not matter, but Louisiana is a civil law state, meaning case law precedent carries much less weight than the other 49 states, which are all common law states.

They kind of were actually. His worst year, excluding Covid and his last season fired mid-year, was 8-5. He had teams ranked 9, 6 and 11. At least 2 of those go to the CFP today. Probably 3. His situation was sort of like Mora at UCLA. The school fired him because it wanted the shiny new coach. Once they got him he turned out to be fools gold.

Yes but also no. It can definitely work and work well. But look at our last two seasons. We were a run heavy team last year with a great offense, but this year we're lighting it up with the passing game and the results are just better.

You need a top tier defense to win with a top tier run game. You can get away with a mid defense if you have a top passing offense. If we had last years defense with this years offense we'd have only lost a couple games over the course of two seasons

Taking the Kevin Ollie approach to firing a coach I see.
