2025-06 Duke

Duke went cold in the closing several minutes and let LSU go on a 12-0 run. This led to a buzzer beater ending. That’s all good. But I thought the refs swallowed their whistles during that stretch letting LSU get away with at least two fouls. One obvious one in the final minute on Flau’jae’s block on Delaney Thomas. The replays on the possession appeal showed it clearly. It would have been Flau’jae’s 5th foul which definitely would have impacted that final minute.

But all that said, part of what made the game so close was that Kara went into clock-burning mode with over four minutes left. That killed their offense, which went totally cold. They’d been rolling over LSU before that, mainly due to their great offensive rebounding. Shutting that down so early was a significant coaching mistake. Also, the impact on LSU’s confidence level was easy to see.

That was quite an ending. Yet another nailbiter in an evening of nailbiters.

I am missing something.

Three seconds left down by one you draw up a play for three.

Don't get me wrong — I can imagine a coach thinking that the only thing necessary is a 2 but the opposing coach knows this, so set up something that looks like you are going to dump it inside for a basket or a foul, and have somebody leak out for potential wide open three. But it wasn't remotely an open three.

What's more, Jackson caught the ball with 1 foot on the three point arc which is a problem if you absolutely need a three but all you need is two, and she made a point of resetting to make sure she was beyond the arc. Is it is simple is this is what was drawn up and she played it exactly as drawn up?
Wasn't she re- orienting to shake the defender?

Any event, if your practice routine is getting feet behind the line then probably best to do it like you practice.

I'm really happy for Duke. Kara runs a program the right way - recruiting through the HS ranks, not relying on mercenary transfers, scheduling tough OOO - and it's so great to see that rewarded. In her post-game interview, Ashlon Jackson was gushing about how empowering Kara's support was and how great she was as a coach.

As an added bonus, my friends and I who are going to Sac-town tomorrow to see the Sacramento Region 1 Elite Eight game will not have to endure Mulkey's jacket tossing side-line antics!

Hoping this link isn't blocked in the US. Nice write up on Fournier's mother, who was also a key character in Degrassi Junior High. While I was aware of this, the article notes that Fournier is also related to one of the original owners of the Toronto Raptors. Interesting irony.

.-.

Said this before, but she definitely rode Dawn very hard on the offense as an tv analyst. Back in the days when SCar was to some degree playing 3.5 on 5 from an offensive talent level.

And fair to say Lawson's gotten to walk in those shoes as a coach.

I like what she's doing at Duke. I suspect she'll have her trophy at some point.

I don't remember that

I have to say that was an AWESOME display of offense against the #1 offensive team in the country (UConn is #2). I was wrong and I have to admit it to my fine Blue Devil fan. I could use some further convincing with a victory tomorrow but in the meantime, I am very happy for the women Blue Devils, today though, to coin the phrase from Al Davis Duke men-"they must go down, and they must go down hard"....Not quite sure how to type out his accent but the rest of the oldtimers will know...

A satisfying year, great to see the team followed the LANK motto.

Lank?
You don’t mean Link?

With Mackenzie Nelson in the portal, I think that Duke needs to think long and hard about bringing her in if she's a grad transfer. She's apparently looking for a better academic situation than Virginia Tech (wants to be a physician), and Duke can certainly provide that. As far as the basketball goes, she led the ACC in A/TO ratio and was second in assists per game. She's also great at taking charges--almost uncanny. Having a steady presence in the backcourt while the freshmen get up to speed would be essential, especially since we're losing Mair to the WNBA (and I've been a big Mair fan for a while).
