He's fluid for his size, but he's not the most explosive. He may be more athletic than people are giving him credit for. He is very good.

Big shoes if that's true. Jeff Adrien was a double double machine.Gotta look beyond his stats. Watch the tape. Quick, Big frame, Great footwork, quick twitch, good passer, 2 yrs eligibility. He tries to play like Karl Malone. Looks like him physically. Will be great both sides with pick and roll. Someone said in other thread Jeff Adrien-ish
Do you think there's any chance Samson could resurrect his 3 point shooting that he was supposedly known for in high school? His form looks so broken now on free throws, but if he could add a respectable 3 point shot to his arsenal, he would be impossible to defend because of how damn fast he is. Drag the opposing center out to the 3 point line, whoops there goes Samson sprinting by you to get an alley-oopThey are clearly recruiting over Samson. Reed Jr. is being recruited as a starting center and that should come as a surprise to no one.
Samson will stay and be a candidate for 6th-man of the year if he keeps his improving. We need a starting big.
It also might take a full year to get the bad coaching habits out of them, which is fine because they would be 2 year players for usWe should all trust Hurley and staff with all this stuff, they're the best in the country at it. Also factor in that Reed and Hausen played their only two college seasons for absolutely terrible coaches.
This is a question Ive had all year. Last year he won the starting 4 job over Alex in part due to his shooting range. Upon his return from his injury he would still come in and jack 3s with comfortability (very small sample size but he shot 2 3s last year and 2 3s this year as a comparison)Do you think there's any chance Samson could resurrect his 3 point shooting that he was supposedly known for in high school? Having a guy go from a 45% free throw shooter with rough looking form to becoming a viable 3 point shooter in a game in one offseason seems like a big jump.Do you think there's any chance Samson could resurrect his 3 point shooting that he was supposedly known for in high school? Free throws and 3 point shots are not at all the same. Even with that he’s hasn’t shown a 3 point shot at allHaving a guy go from a 45% free throw shooter with rough looking form to becoming a viable 3 point shooter in a game in one offseason seems like a big jump.
I get the impression theydon’t want to appear to be recruiting over Samson. This seems to be a complementary player who has muscle to play against more physical centers.
It’s indicative of shooting. Usually, there are parallels between being a good FT shooter and extending the range. NBA often will look at someone (say for instance Castle) and project their shooting potential based on current FT percentage. The idea being the shooting can be developed. Taking a guy whose a 43% FT shooter suggests that extending his range to a point where it’s viable in a game is unlikely.Free throws and 3 point shots are not at all the same. Samson needs to live in the weight room the next 6 months. Not super excited about the pickup but I can see why UConn is going this way. They want Johnson to stay. Well let's trust in the system and hope Johnson gains 20-25 lbs of muscle in the offseason without losing too much of his hops. Whatever happen to his shooting? He came as a recruit who could shoot from outside. I was hopng he could play more of the 4 position and not just the 5 but I don't see that happening based on how ugly his shot is right now.

I think that’s my biggest concern, he seems to be below the rim guyHe's fluid for his size, but he's not the most explosive.

Because if Samson feels like he's been recruited-over, then he'll leave, and we're stuck with Reed-Singare as our center combo- AKA back where we started. We need to manage a fine line between adding another center while not risking Samson leavingWhy wouldn’t they recruit over Samson? We’re trying to win games, not collect friendship bracelets. Samson will get an opportunity to win a starting job. That’s all he can ask for. If he thinks he automatically wins a starting job due to seniority, then I don’t know what team he’s been playing on.

Unless you can manage to get a starting center and a backup center that both fit into the team of course.Because if Samson feels like he's been recruited-over, then he'll leave, and we're stuck with Reed-Singare as our center combo- AKA back where we started. I doubt they'd do that obviously, but it wouldn't surprise me if they looked for someone who would simply do another 25/15 or 20/20 split with him.Just can’t believe people think we’re purposely going after backups rather than starters so we don’t hurt Samson’s feelings.
Exactly. We would all beg him to dunk lolSo was Sanogo
Also, getting two transfers at the same position in the same offseason seems super unlikely in today's NCAA. After all, these guys transferred because they want to playUnless you can manage to get a starting center and a backup center that both fit into the team of course.
Resources might be better spent getting a guy who won't force Samson out so you have more time/money to fill out other positions anyway. Plus there is some obvious future benefit to not recruiting over your own guy.

You think their avoiding recruiting over him while they are actively hosting a guy on a visit who started every game in a P5 conference last year, as well as have had contact with Golden & the POY from the Mountain West conference? All of whom played big minutes last year?Wildly divergent opinions on Samson from good and bad posters alike. I think he makes a leap and is a monster next year. I do think the staff is intentionally avoiding recruiting over him. There is a difference between bringing a guy in to compete for big minutes and a guy like Dickinson who you would pencil in for 30 minutes a night. Clearly the staff wants to get a big body as a complementary player. I assume Samson puts on weight but that hasn’t always worked in the past. And I won’t be surprised if we get in the mix with Dixon, too.
I think I know what they're saying but it's more about convincing the portal player he will get 20 minutes per game and have a chance to compete for the biggest prizes college basketball has to offer. If Samson was going to leave he would've left after last season, he knew then he had no chance of starting over Clingan and he knows now whoever is brought in won't be nearly as good as Clingan. He's already won back to back national championships here and he knows the two headed monster is the formula.Just can’t believe people think we’re purposely going after backups rather than starters so we don’t hurt Samson’s feelings.

It seems apparent by their actions that they are in the portal looking for a starting big. They wouldn’t be having contact with players of that caliber otherwise.Well actually I meant what I said. I think the staff is recruiting players with complementary skill sets to compete for big minutes with Samson and not a guy like Hunter Dickinson that you would pencil in for 30 minutes a night.
