March 7 home opener..........................BRRRRRRRRRR!

Nothing unusual for UConn baseball playing in Connecticut that early in the season. It seems they usually try to schedule an in state midweek game just before they go on their spring break road trip. Before UConn baseball started to use their new baseball facility, this early March game was often scheduled at a school that had an artificial turf field, often this would be at CCSU or Hartford. Now that UConn has a turf field, they are more consistent at scheduling this early March game at home.

I wouldn’t be sure Rutgers is in a better conference. The Big East has done quite well against the Big 10 in head to head competition.

Generally speaking, in terms of Conference RPI year in and year out, the Big 10 seems to do a bit better in Conference RPI than the Big East. Last season, the Big 10 was at No. 8 in the RPI, while the Big East was No. 13.

In 2022 the Big East was 15-9 against the Big Ten. If you discard Butler's 1-4 record vs the Big, the Big east was 14-4. The two leagues are very comparable on the field.

Good argument for Big East playing a stronger OOC slate. Unfortunate that the RPI system disincentivizes that for stronger teams/conferences.

A slight change to the UConn baseball schedule. UConn is still going to play at in California the second weekend of the season. However, the UConn athletics website now shows the Feb. 24 Friday night game will be against Cal Poly. The rest of the weekend still has 2 games scheduled against the University of California. The game against Cal Poly will apparently also be at Berkeley.

Cal Poly, the latest addition to the UConn baseball schedule, finished in second place in the Big West Conference last season, and ended up with an RPI of 99.

Are they still planning on playing in Port Charlotte? The hurricane damage forced the TB Rays to move spring training from Port Charlotte to Orlando

Both the UConn and Ohio State athletic websites still show the Monday game being played in Port Charlotte.

The D1Baseball Top 100 programs that is referenced above is a ranking that D1Baseball.com does every 2 years. This last ranking was done last fall after the 2022 college baseball season. Strictly speaking, it is not a top 100 ranking for the current season like the polls that are done every week of the season. Rather, this poll takes into account how teams have done over the last 10 seasons or so. So teams that do well year in and year out do well in this Top 100 ranking. Whatever the case, it does show that UConn has a number of games scheduled against teams that have been doing well over the years in college baseball.

Ah, UConn baseball will soon be back on the road again, no doubt leaving tomorrow for Florida for their weekend series against Ohio State. By the way, the above story points out that former Husky pitcher Jordan Tabakman is now the pitching coach at FAU, a team UConn will play in a weekend series in early March.

During the FAU game broadcasts, Chris Jones had mentioned the possibility of this week's Hartford game getting postponed due to cold weather. The high temperature in Storrs tomorrow is supposed to be around 36 degrees.

During the broadcast of the weekend games at FAU, Chris Jones said that the team would be flying out to Hawaii on Wednesday. Coach Penders mentioned in one of the post game interviews that it would be an 11 hour flight.
