They should be, but it's a bit hard to argue that they really are. They've had only 3 10+ win seasons since Carroll left after 2009. That's really underwhelming. Oregon clearly took over the Pac 12 for a while, til they stumbled. Now it's fairly much up for grabs.
Even Saban gave it two years. But...it would be on brand. Urban likes an abrupt exit. And Urban will be in

USC to me is kinda like Texas. A sleeping giant that I just keep waiting and waiting and waiting for them to be as good as they should be.Washington had a good stretch as the top team under Don James, long before Oregon ever amounted to anything. USC is still the constant. They have the best history, the most money, biggest name and will always be able to come back with the right person running things.
Fickell would be a solid choice, they absolutely have to get somebody who isn't already a USC guy.
Sounds like we and USC can rule out Cristobal.
Successful coaches believe in themselves. A young successful coach even more so. Failure isn't in their vocabulary, especially one who hasn't experienced it yet. Even if he doesn't do well and is there only for the one contract, its $20-$25 million later. To someone's comment earlier, "that's generational money".I 100% agree, but there is also a boatload of expectations. If you go there and succeed obviously it’s the right choice at probably close to $5mil/yr, but if you fail and are out of that job within 4-5 years do you look back and see a job where you could have stayed that’s going to a P5ish conference where if you continue to succeed you can probably make $3.5-4mil/year for decades to come. And, if you don’t think he can have a perennial Top 10 team in the Big XII with Cincy, I would say the same can apply at USC. I fully get he will likely make this jump for prestige alone, I’m just saying it’s not jumping from a Coastal Carolina or somewhere that you will always be in an inferior conference and is a no brainer.
There's a better chance Ray Meyer will come back from the dead and switch to football than Urban taking that job. Usc needs to get a proven west coast recruiter. There is way to much competition for good players these days to get kids to go all the way out there. They have to get someone who knows and has ties to Cali. And Urban will be in
Meyer probably isn't going there because he is only two games in to his Jaguar career. There's a better chance Ray Meyer will come back from the dead and switch to football than Urban taking that job. Interesting read…

I the past 20 years, USC has had 10 top 10 finishes in at least one of the polls which makes them an elite college football program. Clay Helton had 2 top 10 finishes, but he was fired.in my college football watching lifetime ... USC had the Pete Carroll era. And mostly sucked both before and after. YES really. When I was AT UCLA ... they had Larry Smith and then after PC, Lane Kiffin, Sarkisian, Helton etc etc
They just do not have GIANT status. IN Orange County, CA ... but realistically, the record isn't there. And Texas? rare even beyond. Vince Young. And what?
Do you think using upper case OFTEN in your posts enhances the point you are making?in my college football watching lifetime ... USC had the Pete Carroll era. And mostly sucked both before and after. Carroll, Kiffin, Sarkisian, and Helton all had multiple top 10 recruiting classes at USC. I would say USC's recruiting is a competitive advantage. It fell apart during the end with Helton. Here are USC's recruiting rankings over the years:selective?
Go back 40 years - basically most of our Boneyard watching populace, you add only 1988 + 1989 where they snuck in at 9 or 10.
Pete Carroll had 7 - depends on if you include the One that was voided. NCAA violations and all
Therefore: we are looking at 2 Clay Helton's and 1 Lane Kiffin. And their fanbase and greater Los Angeles puked all over those 2 guys. It really is about Pete Carroll - anyway you slice it. You think they are gonna return? I will bet my Bruins with Chip Kelly. Unless they have to play Fresno State regularly.
Fact is: there is nothing institutional at USC that gains them a big advantage in Pac 10/12/14 Football. I will argue UCLA or Oregon can be just as dominant with the right coach. Washington maybe. There is nothing definitive in pulling out that schedule above. Pete Carroll dominated an era; one that is past and not easily replicable.

Butch Jones. Only making 825k, at Arkansas State and relatively young, 53. Offensive guy. Worth a look. There is something to what he says, but the flip side is many of these guys get taken based on really limited results. Herman was the head coach at Houston for 2 seasons. Frost was at UCF for 2 seasons. The guy from SMU was there for 2 as well, I think. They did what they did with guys who were recruited by their predecessors. They never faced one of those tough years where you lose your quarterback and a couple of star linemen. Who knows how they recruit or how they deal with problems. The guy who left Cincinatti for Tennessee was the same thing. Guys get hot in the media but have minimal experience. But bigger name schools feel obliged to hire them. As the AAA league the AAC coaches were most open to poaching.
