Burby to Wake Forest. Had a gut he was gone when he got the offer last week.

Weird. We seemed like a total lock for him and then seems like contact in both directions took a nose dive a few months back

Never thought he was a lock >> He always seemed to be looking for a "better profile" offer to me...

I thought he was a lock- as much as we have had a lock in recent years. No matter though, not sure he really fits our needs anymore.

I know it's an ACC school, but what would make someone from CT want to go to Winston-Salem, NC to play for Wake Forest?
Are you suggesting UConn cooled on him?

Ask 2018 Wake Forest Commit Rondell Bothroyd from E.O. Smith High School in Mansfield CT what drew him there ;). Some kids just want to get out of State and for others the P5 draw/allure is too much/too real to pass by.

I understand, but still, we're talking Winston-Salem, NC here. No great history, no great geographical location, play in a 31,500 seat stadium, versus the BCS bowl history of the Huskies and the lush surroundings of Storrs!
On a more serious note, at least they hired the kind of guy we all hoped for when UConn hired Diaco. Clawson has them trending in the right direction, so maybe that was the attraction. 3-9 his first two years, then 7-6 and 8-5 last year. We can only pray Edsall can do the same and keep the best players in CT moving forward.

Clawson has done a phenomenal job at Wake. The 8-5 last year included hanging 64 on Syracuse in the Carrier Dome and 55 on Texas A&M in the Belk Bowl.

Downtown W-S has experienced a renaissance and is becoming a foodie and craft beer paradise. Couple that with a top-flight educational opportunities and a beautiful campus with more temperate weather and I can see the attraction.

Complementing HistoryGeek's insights: A relatively small, very well respected university with comparably small class sizes in a small, albeit growing city in a region with markedly higher economic growth may be attractive to even some college football players. As buried in history as we are in New England, Winston-Salem actually has some pretty interesting history (likely little known to most Nutmeggers).

W-S may not be for everyone, but it doesn't have to be ... just the person(s) interested in W-S, Wake Forest, the Demon Deacons' program, etc. That likely includes some CT natives who aspire to study, live, work elsewhere, and/or as you acknowledge to join a gridiron a few years ahead in rebuilding. Not everyone wants to be a builder, some prefer to join up in progress and others will consider consider programs long past the rebuilding stage. To each his own.

I have no expectation that TR ends up in Storrs @ this point - but the local love has to be appreciated.

His current offers besides UConn are Buffalo, Clemson, Florida. FAU, Iowa, Maryland, Michigan, Ohio State, Penn State, Pitt, Rutgers, Syracuse, Temple, UMass, UVA, Virginia Tech and Boston College

When we get this thing turned around, these guys will come. Seems like there’s a lot of pride in CT football right now, but it’s hard to pass up bigger offers in the current state. As long as the staff keeps prioritizing guys like this, we’ll get our fair share.

Was that his game face in those photos, or was he unhappy to be at UConn?
