It’s the right call imo....but how does that take that long to review. The only thing I can think is what to do with the base runner but by letter of the law he never tags on caught ball but who would’ve reacted differently as a runner if seeing a RFielder boot that.

I think they may have been looking to make sure the ump did rule catch.

This happens all the time. Players make what they think is a play without having the umps make calls. Think a bunt down the line, fair or foul?

I was thinking of another anology that happens — a trap/catch in the outfield. That happens all the time and the runner has to look at the ump for the call.
