Nebraska Game Notes
Nebraska Preview from D1Baseball
>>Nebraska (31-22, 15-9 Big Ten): The last time the Big Red won a game in the NCAAs was five years ago against Binghamton. Since then they are 0-4 with a pair of two-and-outs in 2016 and 2017. But they didn’t go into those regionals with the amount of confidence they have right now. In the last few weeks, the Cornhuskers have won series over both Arizona State and Michigan and then won three games in the Big Ten tournament before finally falling in the title round to Ohio State, 3-1.
Don’t look for a ton of fireworks as the Cornhuskers have light sticks, as witnessed by their wimpy .256 batting average. They don’t hit a ton of home runs, just 33 all season, and they aren’t very aggressive on the basepaths, with just 50 stolen bases. Only two players have averages over .280: JC transfer Aaron Palensky (.324-6-31) and the well-named Mojo Hagge (.289-2-25). The Huskers will need some of the underachievers down in the order to take a step up or two for the Big Red to dent the scoreboard. They’ve proven at times that they can but not consistently enough.
The mound corps has a few solid starters in Matt Waldron, Nate Fisher and Reece Eddins. They are backed up by Colby Gomes, who has 12 saves to go along with his 2.70 ERA. But beyond that, the middle innings can be an adventure, although Robbie Palkert (5-3, 3.51) has come on strong as the season has gone on. NU’s overall 4.36 ERA was just sixth best in the Big Ten<<
Projected Pitchers for Friday:
