Nebraska Preview from D1Baseball

>>Nebraska (31-22, 15-9 Big Ten): The last time the Big Red won a game in the NCAAs was five years ago against Binghamton. Since then they are 0-4 with a pair of two-and-outs in 2016 and 2017. But they didn’t go into those regionals with the amount of confidence they have right now. In the last few weeks, the Cornhuskers have won series over both Arizona State and Michigan and then won three games in the Big Ten tournament before finally falling in the title round to Ohio State, 3-1.

Don’t look for a ton of fireworks as the Cornhuskers have light sticks, as witnessed by their wimpy .256 batting average. They don’t hit a ton of home runs, just 33 all season, and they aren’t very aggressive on the basepaths, with just 50 stolen bases. Only two players have averages over .280: JC transfer Aaron Palensky (.324-6-31) and the well-named Mojo Hagge (.289-2-25). The Huskers will need some of the underachievers down in the order to take a step up or two for the Big Red to dent the scoreboard. They’ve proven at times that they can but not consistently enough.

The mound corps has a few solid starters in Matt Waldron, Nate Fisher and Reece Eddins. They are backed up by Colby Gomes, who has 12 saves to go along with his 2.70 ERA. But beyond that, the middle innings can be an adventure, although Robbie Palkert (5-3, 3.51) has come on strong as the season has gone on. NU’s overall 4.36 ERA was just sixth best in the Big Ten<<

Projected Pitchers for Friday:

LHP Mason Feole (3-3 3.50 ERA 75K 43BB over 72.0 IP) vs LHP Nate Fisher (7-3 2.88 ERA 68K 35BB over 78.0 IP)

Kind of amazing that Nebraska doesn’t have more success considering the fan support and facilities they have (and, of course the CWS is in Omaha).

I guess they face similar issues with weather that we do.

So Christian Fedko back in the lineup. Do we know if Nucerino and/or Gardner are ready to play?

Like Winkel at #9. All the recent walks should set up the top of our order nicely

Feole leaves a man of first after a Chris Winkel pop-up flub on the line in shallow right. 2k’s and a groundout.

Headed to B1.

Toppa w/ leadoff single...

Prato moves Toppa over w/ bunt (and misplay/deflection off glove on throw by 1b). Think 1b took one to the mouth and left a tooth on the field).

1st and 2nd- no outs.

Prato moves Toppa over w/ bunt (and misplay/deflection off glove on throw @ 1b). Think second baseman took one to the mouth and left a tooth on the field).

1st and 2nd- no outs.

... and a pop-up bunt to third doubles up Toppa!

I was watching NC State and flipped to UConn

L - O - L with all this ridiculous bunting.

Let them swing (see?)

If they aren’t sending that kid to the dentist why the hell did he come out of the game?
