Walked among the hockey team during the Wagner football game. I was genuinally surprised how tall the team is.

h/t to @RSTuthill for the find...

>>Which team do you think will surprise this season?

Buccigross:
There is so much parity in #cawlidgehawkey that the days of major surprises are over. Air Force and Minnesota State should win their leagues and be able to make a run. Minnesota State, in particular, is much better and could be a real factor this season.

Peters: UConn is not a big-time power, but I think it has a chance to make some noise in Hockey East this season. The team has slowly been building with some intriguing recruiting classes heavy on European talent. Adding to a core that already includes talented forwards Ruslan Iskhakov (New York Islanders), Jachym Kondelik (Nashville Predators) and goalie Tomas Vomacka (Predators), the Huskies have a few blue-chip recruits in Vladislav Firstov (Minnesota Wild) and Matej Blumel (Edmonton Oilers).

I think this all hinges on Vomacka's ability to play big-time minutes in net and continue his success. The Huskies aren't likely to be a real power in college hockey, but they're going to start taking steps out of the shadows in Hockey East.<<

20. Yan Kuznetsov, D, UConn: A 2020 draft prospect who could have stayed in the USHL, Kuznetsov was highly pursued by the Huskies, who get his size and defense right away.

22. Ruslan Iskhakov, C, UConn: Small and slippery, Iskhakov put up some pretty good numbers as a freshman. He’s a New York Islanders pick.

37. Tomas Vomacka, G, UConn: After splitting the crease with Adam Huska as a freshman, Vomacka now gets a chance to shine as the Huskies starter. He’s a Nashville prospect.

82. Jachym Kondelik, C, UConn: A Nashville pick with great size and offensive ability, Kondelik is a great playmaker who is entering his sophomore season.

83. Vladislav Firstov, LW, UConn: Yet another European star recruited by the Huskies, Firstov is great with the puck and has a nice shot. He’s a Minnesota pick.

100. Kale Howarth, LW, UConn: Towering sophomore can also play center. He’s a Columbus pick with a lot of potential.

Interesting thoughts... I find it interesting that the HE coaches poll has UConn finishing ninth, most college hockey publications have UConn finishing about fourth.... Interesting discussion points.

That's what I thought.

All of UConn's Saturday games at the XL Center are scheduled to start at either 3:30 or 4. The Wolf Pack are scheduled to have doubleheaders with UConn Hockey on Oct 12, Nov 9, and Dec 7. There's nothing scheduled to happen at the XL Center after the Hockey team plays on Nov 30 or Feb 1.

>>The result of that self-reflection was UConn's four seniors taking over the locker room. Wyatt Newpower, Ben Freeman, Justin Howell and Payusov began to set the tone and hold teammates accountable at all times, whether it was practice or on the bench during games.

"Those guys are driving the bus," Cavanaugh said. "They basically stood up and said we weren't going to be successful if we relied on all skill and no will. It's no different than what every other coach in the country says, but if you win your 1-on-1 battles, you give yourself a really good chance of winning the hockey game. We went from winning very few of those battles to winning a lot of them, and we saw a lot of results. It was just a matter of guys bearing down.”

For UConn's senior foursome, it wasn't just leading with their words. The players had to lead by example. Barking at a teammate and then lazily losing a battle yourself doesn't create a positive environment. If anything, it would create resentment and possibly tear the locker room apart.

"They're all putting their money where their mouth is," Cavanaugh said. "That's really been the biggest thing for us. Those guys are driving the bus. Those guys have put their money where their mouth is and it's been reflective in their own play — I think their offensive numbers have gone up as well — and in the player of our team.”<<
