Houston Announces Non-Con Schedule

vs McNeese
@ Lynn (Exhibition)
Paradise Jam: vs Drexel, Mercer/Liberty, TBD
vs Incarnate Word
vs New Orleans
vs Arkansas
vs Fairfield
@ Saint Louis
@ LSU
vs Prairie View A&M
vs Providence (Uncasville, CT)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I really don't understand what Houston is doing schedule wise. They continuously schedule these ridiculous non-conference games when we really need them to schedule better non-conference games for RPI purposes. I don't know if its a Sampson thing or what but other than Arkansas and Providence there are absolutely zero games on that slate that help UH or the conference out

Bulls Announce 2017-18 Non-conference Schedule

vs FAU
vs Morgan State
@ Indiana
vs Howard
vs Arkansas State
vs Eastern Michigan
@ Elon
@ Appalachian State
vs FIU
vs Bethune-Cookman
vs Northern Arizona
vs Charlotte

I know they're going to be abysmal next year but man that schedule is maybe the worst I've ever seen

At least everyone knows USF is going to be putrid... The sad part is Houston should be decent next year. Absolutely should have a better schedule than that. Unreal.

LOL at playing road games against Elon and Appalachian St.

Both of those schools schedules are laughable. Those are like Patriot league schedule or worst. UGH!

Yeah that USF schedule is unforgivable. They could easily be a 300 RPI team next year.

Or maybe our dude Terrence Samuel leads 'em to an early season road win at Indiana..

I believe a conference can divide NCAA money anyway they see fit.
Maybe schools who hurt the conference RPI should be exempt from a share.
Other Than that or expulsion the conference has little power to control OCS of its members.

This is how you get a 300 RPI. Jesus are those online colleges?

The UH schedule is not surprising because it's the same collection of stiffs, with maybe two or three legit opponents sprinkled in, every single season. What's surprising is they play a regular season home game, and then play something called Lynn in an exhibition game, on the road??? That's truly bizarre. Lynn must have someone on their staff that's a Kelvin Sampson family member. And they wonder why only 1,800 show up for these games?

This season they face the added hurdle of trying to communicate with their fanbase that the home games are going to be at Texas Southern University's Health and Physical Education Arena. It's just down the street from the UH campus, but whether the 200 students who go, and the balance of the hardcore fanbase, will follow them over there to watch, remains to be seen. It's too bad that TSU's arena seats 8,100. It will look just as empty on TV as Hofheinz has been for many years.

I know LSU fired their coach, but a road game vs a P5 is rarely going to hurt your schedule. If they get a return game from St. Louis next year, that might be worth going on the road this year, because Travis Ford is recruiting very well there, and they will likely be near the top of the A10 a year from now, and should easily be a Top 100, or maybe even a Top 50 type team.

Houston fans aren't happy with their schedule either. I have seen them online complain about it and some have said that the AD is trying to schedule better competition but can't get anything done.

Houston has basketball fans?

I'm sure they say the same about us when we're talking football
The have like 2000 at their games when they play us. I can only imagine what it's like when ECU is in town. We aren't thatttt bad.

Hey guys, please see my post relating to this in the conference realignment forum :D

Providence playing quasi home- neutral games at the Sun? Or is that part of a tournament/showcase? I don't like that.

Looks like Lynn is in Bacon Raton. A stop-off game on way to a holiday tourney like we had vs Loyolaazt year.

We should be careful about making fun of anybody else. Houston went from making three Final Fours in a row (1982-84) to making exactly two NCAA tournament appearances since 1992, only one of those coming after the SWC imploded, which would today be the equivalent of a P5 conference. It took them until Pender's last season in 2009 to accomplish that one, 14 years after the SWC broke up. They're now more than 20 years removed from the big time. We could be in the same shape they're in 20 years from now, if we spend it all on the outside of the P5 looking in. It can happen.

One thing I don't fully understand is why Calhoun is pissed at KO for firing Miller. I guess I can accept that cuz Miller is a branch off JC's tree but the results just weren't there. I do understand the other things about KO that JC is pissed about. As the PC playing at Mohegan - that never would have happened under JC - there would have been hell to pay

Sure, JC could prevent the casino from contracting with other schools to play there. It happens every year, I think UK has played there in the past.

JC would not have let a competitor New England school host a game there.

You are 100% correct here. I could make a list of former powerhouse schools that fell of the face of the earth. These were not quite at UConn's level, but were fixtures in the rankings before falling off.
Houston
St. John's
DePaul
NC State
You could argue that for the first 15 years after the end of the UCLA dynasty, that Indiana was clearly the premier basketball school in America, even over Kentucky, Carolina, and Kansas (Duke was just a wanna be then). What is Indiana now? Some feel that they no longer ever warrant blue blood status. Same goes for UCLA. Any school can stumble. Notice all of the coaches tripping over each other to apply for the Georgetown job? (I'm being sarcastic for those who are a bit slow). Any school can fall, including Alabama Football, which of course did after the Bear left. Few really see the decline early on, but it becomes crystal clear in hindsight. The biggest factor is that anything that happened more than 5-6 years ago is ancient history to the high school kids you need to recruit. Thus, to them, Wichita St. is a powerhouse, while Georgetown is some scrub program that was good when their dad was young.

Hope they atleast meet up with Colorado or wake in the paradise jam but still damn.

we had 5000 show up for a football game vs SMU a few years ago.

I don't expect UC will release its schedule until a week or 2 before the season.

Fifth Third Arena is being completely gutted so UC is playing at Northern Kentucky's arena and thus have to co-ordinate with NKU on scheduling.

However most of the big games UC knows already. Its not bad at all:

Cayman Island Classic
NOV 20th: Buffalo
NOV 21st: Winner of Richmond/UAB
NOV 22nd: Winner of Iowa/Wyoming

DEC 2ND: @Xavier Crosstown Shootout
DEC 9TH: Florida (Neutral court) Never forget Tribute Classic
DEC 12th: Miss State
DEC 16th: @UCLA

Obviously it isn't UCONN level good schedule, but its a good start.
