6 games into a 31 game regular season puts us at roughly 20%. A quick stock-taking of UConn and the rest of the American.

So, other than a couple sources, like KenPom and BPI which must be holding onto something weird with SMU, we see some early season unanimity. And I think, by and large, the roughly four tiers here are pretty good. Houston, Cincy, and UCF, provided they take care of business, should be tournament teams. There's room for UConn or Temple if they take care of things outside of conference or get hot inside of conference.

Oh, I know. But tI figured it's worth taking stock now and every 1/5 this season, I think.
I think you hit the nail on the head in terms of teams that can be tournament teams out of the American. UCF, Houston, Cincy, and then possibly UConn and Temple. I give Memphis an outside shot only because they play a great OOC. UCF has a bad loss already, but did a good last week in Charleston. Houston with a big game to open their new arena next week with Oregon, and Cincy had a good weekend with good opportunities coming up.

From the grey ashes
The phoenix rises, steadies,
Sets sights on its prey

Analytics don’t seem to like us yet, I hope that changes after the Zona, Nova, and FSU games
This is our season in a nutshell as it seems every year in the American prior to January for us. I mean we did do something good against a number 16 at the time ranked team. Need to follow that up.

At first I thought this was a Black Friday/Cyber Monday thread.

20% Off the UConn Season! Lots of Stock Left!

@nomar, @tzznandrew, there's a good one. Nice. Have to get away from game specifics to really produce the more graceful haiku.

An open field lies

seeking room to run

I think that's 6 x 7 x 5 you've got there.

It depends on how you read "field."

Although "field" can have that little shwa "uh" after the "fee" (fee-uld), the standard pronunciation is /fild/ or /fiːld/

Interesting. Never heard it pronounced that way.

Never heard it as a single syllable word? I really only hear it that way.

"Field" is a one syllable word, where the "ie" is a diphthong.
Oddly, even though it's spelled as a dipthong, it doesn't really function as one. It's just a long /iː/ sound in "field," as opposed to the diphthong of "fire" /ˈfaɪər/ (2-syllables) or /faɪr/ (1-syllable). Any time you get a long vowel or diphthong before an "l" or an "r" in English, there's the possibility/likelihood that speakers will add that schwa in. And such local pronunciations mean that I think either reading (/fiːld/ or /fiːəld) is pretty acceptable.

I've always thought of it as a one syllable word as is "feel" with the letter "D" at the end.

Sometimes I hear Fi'- eld, but according to How many syllables dot com, it is a 1 syllable word.

Interesting that this particular site also considers "fire" to be a 1 syllable word, yet the pronunciation guide shows: "fah-yer."

Honestly, I wouldn't trust syllables.com because it doesn't offer the actual, spoken alternatives. "caramel" it decrees is 3 syllables, "crayon," 2. Trust your ear.

I, like you, have always heard it as feel plus D, but have heard the Fi'- eld. And, I'm sure, given the way English works, there are are people you say "feel" as two syllables /fiːəl/.

That tells me it can be either. But then again, when it comes to language I'm a descriptivist rather than a prescriptivist.

We're a much improved team.

I want to see us play Arizona, FSU and UCF to see how much. Should tell us.

The top 5 are the same everywhere. Those are your AAC tournament and bubble teams right there. Memphis has some work to do to get into that conversation.

Interesting tangent...

Back to your OP. UConn is still in the high double digits only because they haven't played more than two games against name opponents and beat the teams they should through 6 games. We fans notice because we follow the team with passion and see a huge difference from 2017-18. The eye test, however, is still more or less subjective, which is what the ranking try to remove from the equation.

UConn's rankings will probably more closely reflect the eye test as conference play starts to get underway.
