UCONN is shooting 48.1% from 2 this season. As many on this board have pointed out, the ability to finish at the rim has been problematic (aside from Adama).
This ranking (244th) is surprising low for a top 25 team. Gonzaga shoots an amazing 61% to rank 1stin the nation. Only Seton Hall (46.3%) and G'Town (43.2%) rank below UCONN in the Big East.

Great 2% Defense - 4th
and surprisingly solid 3 pt shooting % - 87th
and of course rebounding all of their misses - 3rd
have helped to offset for UCONN.

Where did you get that? I asked the other day about that stat because last season UConn was almost dead last in % from close in D1. This year it seems to be better but still not very good. Where does that 57.9% put them in D1 ranking?

It's listed here, I'm guessing the one he quoted was from Bart Torvik. This has us at 58.1%, the 2 sites always seem to vary slightly with what they consider a close 2/shot at the rim. That puts us at 226th in the country

Gonzaga plays in a mid major conference against severely inferior competition. You can’t really use them as a barometer. We would easily shoot 10% points higher if we got to play Pacific, Loyola Marymount, Santa Clara etc….

We can't be good at everything. It apparently hasn't hurt the team enough to keep us from becoming the best we've been in 7 years. But the thing I notice most in games, as far as areas we need to improve, is the fast break. These do count toward the low 2pt %. I remember the narrative of this team is that they love to run, and hate the half court. I don't know who started this. Maybe because past teams had athletic kids who couldn't gel so we assumed they love to run. Anyway, This has been expressed in bone yard threads this year as well. I actually see the opposite. When we break I hold my breath
 
We are #4 in the Country in offensive rebounds per game and #13 in rebound margin. We miss a lot but get a lot of extra chances.
 
The stat also indicates poor shot selection at times. Offensive rebounding can really help overcome this.

I love Martin, but he's good for one or two 17 foot jumpshots the team doesn't need. Jackson's 12-15 ft floaters are another example.

Finally, the team had to endure prolonged slumps from Whaley, Hawkins and others. Polley's slump mostly affects the 3 pt percentage so ignore is early slump.

Also, it seems like Whaley and Akok mostly shoot from outside if it is not a put back. It can be hard for other guys to score consistently inside when you have such a space eater like Sanogo.

Wonder what UCONN ranks in points per possession. A miss, rebound and make counts the same as just a make.
 
If you treat every shot like it is a pass off the rim it is less of a problem. Low % x more shots = more points.

keeping opponents shot % down = more wins.

Does keep my heart rate up, but we have managed some good wins with that approach.

its frustrating how we are bad at what should be the easiest shit in the game. It’s also why I don’t buy the analytics that want us to shoot bunnies and threes

We shoot 58.1% at the rim, 35.7% on 2 point jumpers and 35.3% on 3's. So that's 1.16 points per possession at the rim, 0.71 on 2 point jumpers, and 1.06 on 3 point jumpers. Even with us being so bad at them it's by far the best shot we can take

Kansas has the 2nd SOS in the country and shoots it at 68%.
 
1989-1990 Uconn team shot like 47 percent from 2pt range. If you shoot like that, you need to have something to make up for it. In 1990 it was the turnovers forced...this year it is offensive rebounds. If we shot better, we would just get less offensive rebounds, and probably not score too much more.

I wasn't trying to be negative at all - I love how they are playing this year. I used to watch Michigan State and wish UCONN could beast people on the boards like the Spartans consistently did - and now THEY DO. My point was more that if UCONN can clean up some finishing at the rim (Gaf and Hawk actually have the worst percentages - RJ has improved a lot since last year HELLO 'NOVA, and Whaley and Sanogo are more than solid) the offense would be as good as the defense is and a real long NCAA run could be there for the taking.

I definitely agree with u. Just busting. I’ll get back to business with UConn in time for Sunday’s Gtown game. I’m still in Lala land for a couple more days. Hasn’t happened often past 8 years. Still soaking in it. By Sunday, I’ll be back to getting serious again.

Although to be fair, the WCC is stronger than it usually is this year. St. Marys, as usual, but also San Fran, Santa Clara, and BYU are all decent teams with fringe tourney hopes.
 
You can win a lot of games with great defense, especially with an athletic team that can run the floor.

That said, I think this team is one wing away from being among the top teams in the country. We don’t have that kind of shooter.

Against the "elite" frontcourt of the WCC.

They're one of my two current title contenders (along with Kentucky), but you gotta temper their efficiency stats w/ a grain of salt.
