1st Round Game vs UTSA

Head coach Karen Aston

I watched UTSA yesterday upset the number one seed Rice. Rice had lost only one game in conference. Both teams looked weak offensively and not as good as some BE teams. What school did Aston used to coach? I remember seeing her.

We saw UTSA play USF back in January. USF won 70 - 53. DIdn't know Aston was the coach.

They are an average/middle of the road team for the American. Not a disciplined team on offense. A lot of one on one stuff, little movement. They did a lot of clutch and grab against USF.

UConn's defensive pressure will crush the Roadrunners.

I hope ABC doesn't flip coverage around to other games. Show us the whole game
no matter the score. "us" meaning not just viewers in Ct. but close by...including but not limited
to the Adirondacks.
They don't do "whip-around" coverage anymore. Especially since ESPN got the WBB tourney. They have ABC. ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, FX channels they can put games on. Plus ESPN+ streaming. They show all the games now.

Two things in the stats look like disasters for them. They don't shoot well against average competition, then face us, and they are similarly weak on committing turnovers and now face our defense that creates a ton of them.

They appear to be a pretty good defensive and rebounding team, but on paper their offense will have trouble getting shots at all because of turnovers, and a very low percentage on the shots they do get, because they are weak shooters and our defense is one of the best. The over and under on how many points they get might be among the lowest for any opponent we played this year.

She was head coach for a couple of schools. U of Texas for a time. I want to say that was a shaky gig, but I've erased it.

I hate edit time limits. Checked in on Aston at Texas and her record was quite solid. She got to the Dance 7 times as a head coach. Why she left Texas appears no where ... yet.

I thought Karen Aston had a gap in service after she was no longer the coach at Texas but the gap was a little shorter than I had remembered. Her coaching stint at Texas ended in 2020, I don't see the date but I presume about March. She was named the head coach of UTSA the following March.

I never take winning for granted, but this is not a very good matchup for UTSA...........they don't shoot well and average 18 turnovers a game........hopefully, UConn will not be thinking about the likely second round matchup against Audi Crooks and a good Iowa State team that may be a bit of a tussle......

So, finally found what should be easy. At the end of the 2020 season Ashton's contract with Texas was not renewed. The AD had this to say:“After evaluating and reviewing where we stand as a program and discussing the future, we have determined to move in a different direction with our continued goals to work to contend for conference championships and NCAA elite status,” Del Conte said."

Poster Phil said this is the first time Uconn will play UTSA. He posted Uconn has won 101 straight 1st time meetings. Lets make it 102 first time meeting and not break up a winning streak. GO HUSKIES!!!!!

UTSA and its coach, Karen Ashton, are a good reminder about how the other half lives. She made it to the sweet sixteen four times coaching Texas, getting to the Elite Eight once. And she got fired, took a year off, and got back in. UTSA making the Dance is a big thing for them--momentous. Playing in front of a big crowd, on national tv, against the number one team in the nation. Yes, they'll lose but they will be able to say that they lost to the team that eventually won the NC.

I’m a salty Rice fan.

UTSA would probably have the worst offense in the Big East. They cannot shoot and cannot pass. Interior scoring, which worked mildly against American competition, will not work here.

Their defense is physical and well coached. They have no one for Strong or Fudd.

I suspect this will be about 45-15 at the half. UTSA will likely work hard and perform admirably against our backups.
