is it me, or does that dog have a lazy eye?
Many people think the 1959 Husky was a terrible drawing of our beloved mascot. In fact, it was a startlingly accurate portrayal of a particularly sad Jonathan. And yes, he did have a lazy eye, which the logo captures accurately (but not without what I would consider to be a certain degree of artistic empathy). Though the 1959 Husky shared certain elements with the NeoConcrete Movement that began that same year in Brazil, it caused controversy here in Connecticut -- considered by many as too "shocking" or "raw". Rather than defending integrity of the work, the University quickly changed course, adopting as our logo a humanoid husky with a musket in colonial garb. Though relatively devoid of artistic merit, the colonial husky proved popular and the 1959 Husky was quickly forgotten. I, for one, am glad to see the University once again embrace this profound work and intend to wear it with pride. There will always be those who feel confused or threatened by a subversive work such as the 1959 Husky, but the general outpouring of support in this thread shows how far we have come in the last half century. Bravo 1959 Husky! Bravo!
