As someone who watches women's and men's basketball, having both reveals on the same time was too much for me and there ended up not being anything that I was following in the sports world on Monday, but the numbers show that it was the best time for ESPN to go to the women's bracket after their time on the men's bracket.

It's wild how much viewer pull legacy programs like UConn and Tennessee have. The only other games in the same ballpark were the Iowa upset and SCAR's game against Miami, both of which were on ABC, and therefore presumptively likelier to draw viewers.

The UConn v Mercer game on Saturday was not shown by the ABC affiliate in Philadelphia which is the country’s 4th largest media market. It was preempted by soccer.

What gets me is that it was on a Monday night and the highest numbers were on ESPN and not ABC. There are a lot more people that get ABC vs ESPN.

because the men didn't play on Monday and they did on Saturday.

Probably because ABC gets 5x the viewers from American Idol which airs in the same time slot. Even WWE wrestling airing at the same time as our game had much higher viewership.

I think it is more to do with underlying loyal fan base that was built over decades than rivalry. Most active WCBB forum - Uconn, second most active - TN.

Walz has done great with building Louisville, Dawn with building SC, but Pat and Geno both started 3 decades ago.

so the two largest audiences recently are games with us, and with creighton?
ca-ching! suck an egg you non big easters. and get sum eyeballs too cuz a little help would be appreciated, and pulling the sled requires more than just one dog. mebbe put up a qc code on ur broadcasts for a free hotdog at arby's, or a free pint of original, best in class, New England maple syrup.

Keep in mind that Creighton was on ABC, which inherently increases viewership. UConn’s 1.1 million viewers was on ESPN. The fact that it comfortably surpassed every ABC game is noteworthy.

And for those who still wonder why WCBB isn't on the same financial reward system as the MCBB:
1 Duke-Michigan State 11.2 million viewers
2 Michigan-Tennessee 9.8 million
3 Kansas-Creighton 8.8 million
4 Villanova-Ohio State 8.6 million
5 North Carolina-Baylor 7.1 million viewers.

That is a huge difference in viewership. On the Plus side of the equation, The WCBB broadcasting rights are expected to fetch $97-121 million on its own when the contract expires in 2024. Maybe then, the Tournament can payout to the schools.

Can you post the stations along side the viewer numbers? If those are CBS games they have a pretty big baked advantage. If on the other hand they are TBS or, especially truTV games then the viewership number is even more impressive.

I have a healthy skepticism about the $97-$121 million estimate. I read the consultant report and it really was not based upon tangible factors such as viewership and sponsor interest. hopefully, it is correct, because that is good for the sport, and particularly good for Connecticut who is the one of, if not the, biggest draws in women’s basketball.

All of those games were on CBS. The Final 4 is on TBS this seaason.
