-> In the past few days, at least two crosscheckers reached out to me — one to sing the praises of hard-hitting and red-hot FAU slugger Jackson Ross. Another reached out to say that FAU was a team to keep close tabs on moving forward.

The good news is that the Owls were already on my radar. You see, head coach John McCormack has done a terrific job with the FAU program since he took over more than 15 seasons ago. And just last season, the Owls, though they didn’t reach the NCAA tournament, put together a solid campaign that ended with 34 wins and an impressive 18-12 Conference USA record.

So, it shouldn’t come as ‘too’ much of a surprise that FAU is one of the hottest teams in Division I Baseball after two and a half weeks of action. In addition to taking a series from South Florida last weekend, McCormack’s club also has midweek wins over UCF, and most recently, a triumph just this week over a Top 25 Miami club. <-

The game notes attached to this article list the following starting pitchers for UConn this weekend:

Friday - Ian Cooke
Saturday - TBA (I would expect either Stephen Quigley or Jack Sullivan)
Sunday - Andrew Sears

I would not at all be surprised if Sears is the Friday night starter at some point during the season. I hadn't seen him before Sunday other than a youtube video. Very small sample but really liked the jump on his fastball, works quickly, and attacks hitters. Great job getting him.

We will see what happens, but it certainly looks like Sears is likely to be a fixture in the weekend rotation. Sounds like he did very well in fall ball as well from everything I saw and heard.

-> Connecticut will have its hands full taking on a Florida Atlantic squad that has been rolling in the early part of the season. In eight games, the Owls are 7-1, including a 6-5 victory over No. 22 Miami (Fla.) on Tuesday, the team’s first win over a ranked opponent since May 2021. FAU has almost doubled the scoring output of their opponents, outscoring the opposition 73-38 on the year. They’ve received contributions up and down the roster in every aspect of the game: the Owls’ offense is currently batting an impressive .317 as a team while the pitching staff has compiled a combined ERA of 2.55. <-

Top 2nd, Huber with a leadoff double for UConn's first hit of the game. A Padilla ground out for the second out drives in Huber for a run. 1-0 UConn going to the bottom on the 2nd.

Padilla struggling like he has been a productive out was at least a step forward.
