Hans the rapper.
Ain't sitting in the crapper
Like an all day fapper
Or maybe just a napper
Or a sugar pea snapper
Strung out like Jake Tapper
With a piece of Old Trapper
Lookin dapper in his cape
But in need of escape
Hiding in the stall
And dissing DePaul

What do Little Feat and Tower of Power have to do to get some love. Both of these bands were considered influential and are still touring and selling out mid size venues today.

If the voters simply listened to Spanish Moon off Waiting for Columbus, both bands would be instantly inducted and also awarded the Noble Peace Prize.

I don't know, but I'm still inclined to go with your original impression. When you talk about "roots" you're talking about earliest influences. No doubt, as though Wikipedia article notes, there were also western influences, but influences aren't roots.

Just my humble opinion.

Whenever someone mentions Glenn Campbell, I can't help but think that he was a part of the original Wrecking Crew. He was an extraordinarily talented sessions musician who did not read music, but eventually grew into the artist that we all know.

Glenn was on OG ragin' against the machine. Rinestone Cowboy? Legendary eye poke at commercializaiton and the trappings of fame.

I've been walkin' these streets so long
Singin' the same old song
I know every crack in these dirty sidewalks of Broadway
Where hustle's the name of the game
And nice guys get washed away like the snow in the rain
There's been a load of compromising
On the road to my horizon
But I'm gonna be where the lights are shinin' on me
Like a rhinestone cowboy
Riding out on a horse in a star-spangled rodeo
Like a rhinestone cowboy
Getting cards and letters from people I don't even know
And offers comin' over the phone
Well, I really don't mind the rain
And the smile can hide all the pain
But you're down when you're ridin' the train that's takin' the long way
And I dream of the things I'll do
With a subway token and a dollar tucked inside my shoe
There'll be a load of compromisin'
On the road to my horizon
But I'm gonna be where the lights are shinin' on me
Like a rhinestone cowboy
Riding out on a horse in a star-spangled rodeo
Rhinestone cowboy
Gettin' cards and letters from people I don't even know
And offers comin' over the phone
Like a rhinestone cowboy
Riding out on a horse in a star-spangled rodeo
Like a rhinestone cowboy
Gettin' cards and letters from people I don't even know
Like a rhinestone cowboy

Say what you want about Foreigner. Cold As Ice is an all time great song. They are certainly as accomplished as some of the other bands that have been inducted.

Lou Grant has an unreal voice - Midnight Blue is a cheesy guilty pleasure - but I think I could be just fine never hearing Foreigner, Styx or REO Speedwagon ever again.

If country music is limited to Merle Haggard and Buck Owens then yes. If you go back to Jimmy Roger's and before, it was Appalachian folk music with a little delta blues on the side.

Bakersfield as a center for country music began after the dust bowl migration. Those who started that genre relocated from places where country music was ubiquitous for decades.
Which is why the full name for the genre is "Country and Western" music. The western has been dropped in recent years.

I like Tull and Little Feat, but no. About 1/3 of the existing HOF should be kicked out. Not every band with a few good records belongs in the HOF. By these standards half of all MLB players would be in the HOF. I admit, that seems to be what it is, but it should be for the best of the best.

Don't diss Glen.

He was (briefly) a critical member of the Wrecking Crew, tour with the Beach Boys in the mid 1960's as Brian Wilson's replacement and was one of the best pickers ever.

Squeeze is underrated.
Steel Pulse are touring road warriors with an amazing catalog of reggae music. They will be considered one day.

I get that their music was popular at the time but I cringe when I hear them now.

Not quite rock, but he sure brings it...

Finally, I'd propose this as starter for a list of "banneds" ...

I find a lot of inconsistencies in the nominating and voting process. Kate Bush is great, but how many Americans really know a damn thing about her? And if she gets in, why are legendary UK guys like Roy Wood/The Move (Wood is already in with ELO) or Paul Weller/The Jam/Style Council not also under consideration?

If George Michael gets in, what about other pop artists with far longer histories and more hits, like The Carpenters or Cher or Phil Collins?

Progressive rock is underrepresented. I'd argue that King Crimson, Jethro Tull, and ELP are all more influential than Rush.

And when talking about "influential", strong cases could be made for The Replacement, Big Star and Thin Lizzy, bands who are routinely cited as major influences for dozens of major bands.

Here's a somewhat rando list done in 2021 of "100 Major RnRHoF Snubs". A handful, like Willie and Dolly and The Spinners have since gotten in. I don't agree with most of the suggestions, but in addition to the artists I cited above, I'd say Iggy Pop, Dionne Warwick, Glen Campbell, Brian Eno and probably The Smiths should all be next up.
If it took YES until 2017 to get in and King Crimson, ELP and Jethro Tull are not in then the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is a disgrace,

It was horrible that YES was not inducted while Chris Squire was alive.

Bands like YES until they were elected and ELP, King Crimson and Jethro Tull do not need the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame to validate their greatness.

I was hoping this thread would go down a rabbit hole of posters bringing up obscure bands and it hasn't disappointed.

Marquee Moon is an incredible album. It's insane listening to it today that it came out almost 50 years ago. Hugely influential.
I recall being ridiculed for posting an RIP Tom Verlaine thread as nobody heard of him, or at least didn't find him noteworthy enough for a thread. Their loss.

It wasn't because you thought it was a secret reunion of The Beatles?
No, I don't even recall that. I do recall the rumors when people thought Badfinger was The Beatles, or at least some of them.
