As Geno noted last year, Brianna Turner is going to be a heck of a player. She needs to get healthy first. Best wishes to her!

If the NCAA tourney were on the line, I'll take a UConn win by any means, even if it means UConn advances past an underhanded squad. For a regular season game, I prefer both teams at full strength.

Sounds like ND has a big gap in personnel with Turner and Reimer, not to mention Ali Patberg. Of course, Muffet is a rare gem in WCBB coaching and will keep ND competitive or better as long as she coaches to her philosophy and system. Indeed, however, man could she use Jewel Lloyd's senior season!

Tough news. Wishing the best for both women and their families.
The Turner situation sounds like it is heading into the 'chronic' territory, but in most of those situations you can choose when to perform surgery and the chance of making it worse if surgery is postponed is not that great - it does become a 'management issue' and a pain tolerance issue. So it might be possible for her to continue to play with a brace and have surgery at the end of the season. The advantage of the shoulder is it is not a weight bearing joint so the stresses are not as great as hip, knee, and ankle.

Reimer's injury sounds more problematic - I hadn't realized they had already been 'managing' it by limiting minutes and practice time. Nor that it had first surfaced last year - based on that, I am a little surprised she played on the PanAm USA team as a solid summer of rest might have been a better option. (It sounds similar to what Boykin has been dealing with and I hope Uconn does not bring her back until she is completely pain free. Achilles tendons are really tricky.)

Wednesday's game against Ohio State could be interesting - with both playing I think ND would have handled them, with neither playing ND will have a hard time, especially dealing with the Ohio guards driving to the basket.

This is so, so sad. You never want to see players go down with injuries.

It sounds like Turner is going to have to have surgery on her shoulder. With Reimer, achilles issues are really problematic.

I wish both players the best.

Well this sure sucks for ND. And WCBB for that matter. Not a lot of teams that can give UCONN a game. Be that much tougher now.

However, if you gotta redshirt a year, this would be the year to do it. But still hope they get better soon.

So it seems like ND will be without Reimer and Turner. Here is hoping for their speed recovery. But Muffet McGraw recruited extremely well and has lots of good players to try out. No doubt the ND players will play with more energy and aggressiveness. UConn has played with 2 freshman in the rotation. UConn-ND will be a great white out game this Saturday.

Apparently it's the same shoulder. I kind of hope they do the surgery and shut her down for the year - it seems like that shoulder has become susceptible as it is. Parker's shoulder was an issue as well and IIRC she ended up getting surgery after her time in Knoxville.

Turner is a rare talent as well and it maybe it would be for the best if she ends up getting the surgery and an extra year so that she could maximize her time in South Bend. They've got talent coming in so it's not like this season is make or break by any means. I wish her the best.
And just before the season started, ND lost incoming frosh Ali Patberg to an MCL. With the early departure of Loyd, the Irish went from a guard-oriented offense to a post-orientation. Now it looks like back to a guard-oriented one, centered around Kathryn Westbeld. Hope all three -- Patberg, Turner and Reymer -- heal well and come back next year with incoming frosh Erin Boley and Jackie Young. In the meantime, lots of playing time for Mabrina and Arike.

So if we play ND Saturday with no Turner or Reimer and we beat them by 50, will Muffet take it personally? Should Geno go easy in the 2nd half as a goodwill gesture?

Absolutely not. Injuries are part of the game. Miss Muffet has plenty of talent...according to the recruiting services. Next in line, time to step up.

I know from experience how bad a shoulder injury can be and how long it can take to heal after surgery.

My best wishes to Brianna Turner for a successful outcome, surgery or not.

Ugh!! This is such disheartening news, especially for these two great kids, of course, but for the prospects for the game. In competitive sports, few factors offer as much interest and entertainment value as the existence of the most bitter rivalries. At the beginning of the season you mentally circle the date in your calendar. You look forward to that date with the most eager form of anticipation, because, after all, you "hate" the rival team. This isn't anything like playing just another worthy opponent, say, University of South Florida, just to pluck one example out of the air. Why "hate" them? But with ND, it's entirely different, where "hate," with quotation marks, of course, is the applicable word. The quotation marks speak for themselves, but indicate in large part that hate is tempered by, hard though it may be to admit, fear and respect of that rival. How can you enjoy "hating," and maybe defeating, your rival when they're at less than full strength due to injury. ND seems to be bitten by the worst luck of anyone in this regard. Most BY'ers, I'm proud to say, expressed true dismay when Achonwa went down in the stretch run a couple of years ago...now this. Too bad.

Odd that we're focusing on ND when we have a ranked opponent tonight in DePaul. It appears that the Blue Demons have a couple of 6'2" forwards and three guards, one of whom is a pretty good 3-pt. shooter. Doug Bruno, another of Geno's very good friends (like Jim Foster), is also a good coach who has seen Geno's magic up close on the national team. Usually, UConn flays DePaul by 30 or more, but coming off a road trip with only a day's rest, the Huskies may not be as sharp as expected. On the other hand, with such great depth, UConn will probably win this one going away.

As for ND and its injured duo, this is just another blow for a snake-bitten team. It's tough enough to lose one of the nation's best players in Jewell Loyd to early departure as well as its top rated freshman, but the loss of Turner and Reimer guts the Irish interior. True, Muffet is one of the best coaches in wcbb and will compensate as well as anyone could. However, when fully manned ND would have a high hill to climb playing UConn; now unmanned its chances are stuck at base camp.

The biggest game of the year, other than the NCAAs, was always going to be South Carolina on the road. These injuries to ND just mean they lose by 35 instead of 25. The good news about this year is that players we will rely on heavily next year are getting a ton of playing time - the healthy ones anyway.

Not my words, but those of the South Bend Tribune.

LINK

Key points:
Turner hurt her shoulder trying to block a shot, nearly blacked out from the pain.
Not yet known if she will have surgery.
Reimer felt a lot of pain in her Achilles after UCLA game.
Reimer is having an MRI to determine the extent of her injury.

Kudo's and honor's to the BONEYARD FANS !!!!
"ND IS A COMPETITOR NOT AN ENEMY" BONEYARD-ER'S PAT YOURSELVES ON THE BACK FOR BEING WBB FANS AND NOT CUT THROATS. NO ONE GLOATING OVER THIS ONE I"M IMPRESSED BY YOUR COMPASSION.

If Turner's injury is painful but not something that would be made worse by movement, think they could try a "Willis Reed"?
Have her come out and unexpectedly start. Not able to do much but be a psychological boost. Would work better if they were at home tho...

I guess it will depend on the MRI/ tests being done. But I would not want ND to do a Willis Reed on Turner. Not fair to her and her long term health.

If her shoulder is in that bad shape, she should opt for the surgery or what ever corrective action is needed.

It would work better if Turner had someone to emulate Walt Frazier. In the "Willis Reed Game," the Knicks center went on the court heroically (enduring massive pain from a hip injury) and jacked up the home MSG crowd. He even tossed in a long-range shot. Bedlam!

Then Willis sat, Clyde took over and played one of the greatest clutch performances in NBA history. IIRC, something like 36 points and 17 assists to send the Lakers down to defeat. Wow just WOW!

They still call it the "Willis Reed Game.":rolleyes:

According to GENO--his team does not play the score--they play against the "game"--they meet team goals. However, he has called off his Huskies by putting in the (former) walkon's early. Has also run other teams into the ground --think Syracuse.

A far different era than the current "no expectations" Melo Brand era.

Clyde the Glide was Drexler. and BTW, the referenced game was Game #7 for the NBA Championship. Clyde Frazier also had five steals and the LA team the Knicks beat had Wilt, Jerry West, and Elgin Baylor. An epic game! :)

Bad break for ND.

UCONN fans know only too well about injuries to key players, as some of those injuries have not only cost the Huskies national championships, but severely curtailed careers, beginning with Shea Ralph's initial ACL tear, which in my opinion, ended an almost certain title, as NO team was going to stop that train.
