Weekly Recap 11/8 – 11/15

Weekly Recap

A new idea I’m running with here: a weekly recap of everything UConn basketball. So let’s give it a go.

11/8 – vs. Maryland (78-77 W)

  • Closer than the experts would have thought, but the awfully Maryland-heavy “neutral/away” game got to the Huskies late in the second half. If Shabazz Napier didn’t pick up a technical foul and then foul out, the Huskies would have rolled by at least 10. During the final possession of the game, Ryan Boatright played the best defense I’ve ever seen him play on Maryland’s Dez Wells.

11/11 – vs. Yale (80-62 W)

  • Yet another typical in-state contest between Yale. The highlight of the night was Shabazz Napier’s 2nd career triple double. In addition, senior swingman Niels Giffey poured in another 15 points. UConn controlled the game and easily won.

11/14 – vs. Detroit (101-55 W)

  • Niels Giffey has arrived. He has officially found his mojo. This was the player we all thought would become after his breakout performances in the 2010 Maui Invitational. Detroit never really came close to UConn. Shabazz Napier almost notched another triple double, and Omar Calhoun dropped in 17 points. Ironically enough, the top two scorers on the Huskies squad play the same position and are from different continents.

11/17 – vs. Boston University

11/21 – vs. Boston College*

UConn should roll into the 2k Sports Classic 4-0. A first round battle versus rival Boston College is the only thing that prevents UConn from potentially facing Indiana. It should be a good week for the Huskies.

Player of the Week:

Niels Giffey (14.3ppg, 4rpg, 84.6% 3pt.)

Freshman of the Week:

Amida Brimah (5.3ppg, 2.0rpg, 4.7bpg)
