UConn Gets 7 Seed; Will Play St. Joe’s In 1st Round

The University of Connecticut men’s basketball team earned an at-large spot in the 2014 NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship on Sunday afternoon. UConn, with an overall record of 26-8, is the seventh-seed in the East Region and will play No. 10-seed Saint Joseph’s (24-9) on Thursday in Buffalo, N.Y. at the First Niagara Center in a second round game. The game will tip at 6:55 p.m. Eastern will Vern Lundquist, Bill Raftery and Allie LaForce on the call.

Saint Joseph’s won the Atlantic 10 Tournament this past weekend and took a 65-61 win in the championship game over VCU. Saint Joseph’s also defeated Dayton and St. Bonaventure in the tournament and have won 20 of its last 25 games since starting the season 4-4.

The Hawks are led by senior guard Langston Galloway with 17.5 points per game to go with 4.3 rebounds. Senior forward Ronald Roberts scores at 14.4 points per game and 7.4 rebounds. In all, the Hawks have four players who average in double-figure scoring – including freshman DeAndre Bembry at 12.0 points per game and senior forward Halil Kanacevic at 10.7 ppg.

The winner of the UConn vs. Saint Joseph’s game plays the winner of the first round game between No. 2 seed Villanova (28-4) and No. 15 seed Milwaukee (21-13) on Saturday with game time TBA.
