Saniya Chong Sets Scoring Record

UConn signee Saniya Chong, a 5-9 guard from Ossining NY, not only led her team to its first New York State Championship, she broke the state’s single-season scoring record along the way. The record had previously been set by Caren Schoff in the 1994-1995 season. Schoff maintains her place atop the list of all-times career scorers for New York State with 3,548 points. Chong currently has 2,962 points with one more game on tap at the New York Federation Championships.

Chong’s career point totals put her in 4th place in the state scoring records. To show how impressive Chong’s – and Schoff’s – accomplishments are, here are some select others on the top scorers list: Sammy Prahalis (27th at 2,372 points), Breanna Stewart (28th; 2,367 points), Epiphanny Prince (31st; 2,320 points), Shenise Johnson (42nd; 2,244 points) and Chamique Holdsclaw (66th, 2,118 points). Fine company indeed.

There is no chance Chong could move into third place on the list of scoring leaders as Niesha Butler, a Georgia Tech signee, holds that spot with 3,127 points.

By winning the Class AA State Championship, Ossining has a bye into the final game against the winner of Murry Bergtraum, the PSAL champion for the 15th consecutive time, and CHSAA winner Bishop Ford. Murry Bergraum has produced many Division I players through the years, including Rutgers’ Epiphanny Prince, Tennessee’s Shannon Bobbit and Syracuse’s Erica Morrow. The game will be played March 23rd at the Times Union Center in Albany.
