Huskies Finish Tenth In Capital One Cup Standings

The University of Connecticut finished tenth in the final standings for the Women’s Capital One Cup, which rates the top athletic programs in the country each year based on NCAA Championship performance and position in final polls. A total of ten teams receive points in each sport.

UConn was the highest ranked team from the BIG EAST Conference by eight positions at Notre Dame was 18th. The Huskies were in prestigious company as North Carolina won the cup followed by Stanford, Oregon, Texas and Penn State. UConn finished ahead of such schools as Duke (11th), Tennessee (13th), Maryland (20th), Syracuse (21st) and Minnesota (24th).

UConn received points in three sports – women’s basketball, which won the NCAA tournament; field hockey, which advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA tournament; and women’s cross country, which finished eighth at the NCAA Championship.

“I am very proud of all of our student-athletes, coaches and staff that helped us ranked so high in the Capital One Cup,” said UConn Director of Athletics Warde Manuel. “As I have said many times before, we have been great in the past, we are great now and will continue to be great in the future. The universities that finish high in these standings are the elite programs in the country and all of us at UConn are committed to remain an elite program ourselves for years to come.”

In addition to those teams that scored points, the UConn women’s lacrosse team played in the NCAA tournament while the women’s swimming and diving team, and women’s indoor and outdoor track and field teams sent numerous individual qualifiers to NCAA competition.
