Five Huskies Named to USA Basketball Teams

Five University of Connecticut women’s basketball standouts have been selected to compete for USA Basketball this summer on either the World University Games Team or the FIBA U19 World Championship squad. Bria Hartley and Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis made the World University Games Team while Moriah Jefferson, Breanna Stewart and Morgan Tuck were selected to the U19 World Championship team.

Tryouts for the teams took place at the U.S. Olympic Training Center (USOTC) in Colorado Springs, Colo. over the weekend. The 12-member teams were chosen from a pool of the nation’s top players by the USA Basketball Women’s Junior National Team Committee, which is chaired by Chattanooga head coach Jim Foster. 33 players tried out for the U19 Team and 33 others tried out for the WUG Team.

The 2013 World University Games women’s basketball competition will be held July 8-15 in Kazan, Russia, and the team will regroup in Colorado Springs for training June 25-July 1. 2013 FIBA U19 World Championship, hosted by Lithuania from July 18-28 in Klaipeda and Panevėžys.

Team USA has won five-straight gold medals at the FIBA U19 World Championship and the team has won gold eight times in 16 tries at the World University Games.

All five Huskies have won at least one gold medal with USA Basketball in past years. Mosqueda-Lewis has won gold at the World Championships as a member of the U16 Team in 2009, the U17 Team in 2010 and the U19 Team in 2011. Hartley won gold at the 2010 U18 World Championship and the U19 World Championship in 2011. She also took home gold as a member of the 3×3 National Team in 2012.

Jefferson won gold, along with Tuck and Stewart, at the U18 World Championship in 2012. Tuck also has gold medals from the 2010 U17 World Championship and the 2011 U19 World Championship. Stewart has won a total of four gold medals, including the 2011 U19 World Championship, the 2010 U17 World Championship, the 2009 U16 World Championship and the aforementioned 2012 U18 World Championship.
