Diaco on the Star system

Just passing along a fantastic article Dez just posted a little while ago. It gives Coach Diaco’s thoughts on the star system and how it affects recruiting at UConn.

A few thoughts on this:

First, I absolutely love the frankness in which Diaco speaks.  It just sounds like he has a plan, and he’s going to stick to it.  No outside influences will change what this guy does here.  He believes in what he’s doing, and he believes he’s bringing in the best players for UConn Football to have success.

Second, I love how he’s not hating on recruiting sites, because they do give exposure to high school football and its’ players around the country.  They make money for those who run the sites, and for fans it’s fun to follow.  However, he made it clear that nobody on his coaching staff will use anything other than what they see to evaluate a player.  I LOVE THIS!  The ONLY conclusion to draw from this is that if we offer someone, it’s because the staff feels that player can make a difference on this team.  I feel confident that when UConn has offered someone, 5 stars or no stars, that the staff has done their homework on that player.

Lastly, I like how he kind of tells the fanbase to relax a bit when it comes to expecting 4 and 5 star kids every year.  We play in the AAC.  He makes mention of that.  Obviously we’d love to have 20 5-star kids knocking down the doors to come play at UConn, but that just isn’t reality, and probably won’t be for the foreseeable future.  However, he feels with the guys they’re bringing in, they can win in the AAC, and THAT’S WHERE WE NEED TO START! This guy gets it.  Completely gets it.  Nothing here will ever change until we start winning games in whatever conference we’re in.  Diaco believes he’s putting a team together who can do that.
