OT: YouTube tv

Been there, done that. Airplanes flying overhead would disrupt the picture which would roll on occasion for unknown reasons. Back then ALL TV was absolutely free. When talk started about something called "cable" I thought it was ridiculous that someone would actually pay to watch TV. Now look at us. How embarrassing to be led by the nose by all companies getting very rich off of us with nary a complaint.
Question I keep asking myself as I pay through the nose for the latest and greatest - Are we better off or are we so inundated with "stuff" we never have the time, or worse, the interest in watching on our 70", wall-mounted, 5-layer, tandem OLED G5 glare-resistant LED backlighting "television"with integrated AI all with streaming the must-watch popular content, extensive libraries, live sports and bundles that wrap all your payments into one neat package? Actually, its pretty shocking to look at what I used to pay for tv, phone and internet all bundled together with my cable provider to what I am paying today.

Anyway, for those who want to find out what's available from the latest streaming services you might take a look at FlixPatrol or Cord Cutter Weekly. Good luck in finding something that fits your budget - or most likely will expand your budget so you don't miss anything.

I’m considering dropping Hulu and subscribing to YouTube TV. (I am not doing this to access the NFL package!).

For those who have experience with YTTV I have some questions.

One of the positive attributes of Hulu is I can stream it anywhere in the US on my phone or tablet and usually cast to a smart tv. (Downside is no easy Hulu access in Europe.)

1) Can you stream YouTube TV on mobile devices?

2) If yes, can you cast to televisions?

3) If yes to #1, does this work overseas?

4) Your overall experience with YTTV. Any pleasant surprises or unexpected disappointments ?

Thanks!
Yes, Yes, IDK, I think it is US locations only. I have been bouncing from Fubo, YTTV, Hulu+ Live for the last few years. Mainly because of UConnWBB bouncing around from SNY and whatever channel they are on. YTTV had SNY then dropped them. Which switched me to FUBO. It was ok, i did like the format, however, no Turner networks.
Then I tried Hulu + Live for a while. It was ok, but I didn't like the functionality of it. I dropped it a few months ago when YTTV had a 3 month reduced rate (which is their old rate $69.99) . Out of the 3 I did live YTTV the best. Another good thing about YTTV is you can watch it in other locations. Just sign in with your credentials and it will give you your TV guide with the locals in that area. Hulu + Live TV is going up to $90.00 on October 21.
I only subscribe to ESPN + which is now called ESPN Select. I got it for $99 for a year.
So now for the not so good. It will go up for me at the next payment to $82.99.
They often have “Carrier Disputes”. A couple of months ago it was with the Disney family of networks. It got resolved for now. The latest is NBC Universal. They are threating to drop all the NBC networks. I believe that will include NBC, NBC Sports ( I have NBC Boston on YTTV) Some Big10, USA, Bravo, and anything else under that Peacock.
Hopefully they will come to an agreement before the start of BB season.
I do like streaming, but I don’t like the splitting up of all the sports networks and the rediculous amount of subscriptions and money it now costs. Cut the cord to try and save. It has worked for a while. Only good thing is you can shut it off with no penalty or contract. I hope this helped. Good luck with whatever choice you make.

We have YouTube TV and really like it.

You can absolutely stream on mobile devices. The interface is a little fidgety for me because I am Deaf and need captioning, but for the most part it's easy enough to use. And as an added bonus you can stream on up to 3 devices at once. See my picture of my living room during March Madness (we only have two TVs in that room in March - I'm not addicted to TV!). What you don't see in the picture is my laptop streaming ANOTHER game (I love both the men's and the women's tournament so I have ALL THE GAMES ON whenever possible). This also comes in handy because I travel for work so I can watch on my iPad or my iPhone wherever I am and my husband can still watch at home as well. Our TVs have the app installed so we don't have to cast, but we have done it before (nationwide, haven't tried it internationally).

We also have come to really like the "split screen" option - if you look at the TV on the left of my picture, there are two games being shown simultaneously. They do up to 4 games in one screen, although I find that really hard to watch. Basketball is too fast to have that much action happening in front of you all at once! Last weekend we watched a WNBA game and two NFL games at the same time on one screen. During the Olympics we could watch several events at the same time. That being said, we have large TVs (mine is 55 inches and my husband's is 75 inches). I couldn't do it on a smaller screen. This is an evolving feature and isn't available for every game, but it is becoming a more common offering.

Another perk is you can set it up so that YouTube TV will record things for you and keep them in your "library". We record college basketball, college softball, college volleyball, etc. We literally can set it to record "women's college basketball" and it will record whatever games are running for the duration of the season. I forget how much it will store, but it is a decent amount as long as you watch somewhat regularly. I have been able to access and watch these saved games on my iPad on the road.

Not being able to watch UCONN games last year was really frustrating after they dropped SNY, but otherwise we've been pretty happy with the offerings. Been a couple threats of discontinuing the contract with ESPN, but so far so good. We get a lot of sports, which was our main goal, and enough other channels that we don't feel like we are missing out on anything. Which reminds me of another feature (might be common among streaming services, I don't know). You can set up the app so that it only shows the channels you want under your account identity, and arrange those channels in the order you would like. My husband has all the sports channels and only a few others. I have all the sports channels and more of the "fluff" like USA, The Food Network, BBC America, etc.

The cost of YouTube TV has gone up quite a bit in the past few years. For now we feel like it is worth it, and we are lucky enough to be able to afford it, so on we go.

OOOoo love your sports bar set up. I watch this the same way 1 big TV with split screen, IPad and Laptop.

YouTube TV is not cheap...
The standard price for the YouTube TV Base Plan is $82.99 per month, though this price can vary depending on promotional offers for new customers and military discounts for eligible members. Additional costs apply for add-on features like 4K Plus for $9.99/month or premium channels and packages starting at $1.99/month.

Base Plan Cost
  • Monthly Rate: $82.99/month

  • Includes: More than 100 live channels, including local and national news, sports, and entertainment.

  • Other Features: Unlimited cloud DVR, which can be paused or cancelled at any time.
Hulu just went up to $89. The difference isn't worth changing mostly because it includes ESPN+

This is regarding the latest YTTV. It was FOX that they had a dispute with this summer.
I got them mixed up…

Well, it is better than the 3 stations that we had long ago, but I did like getting up from the couch to turn the dial whenever I had to change the channel. But then again, it was free.

Had Hulu, switched to YouTube and everything about it is better for me, Hulu buffered often for me while it has never happened with YouTube. Picture quality looks better also, again I’m not sure why but I was mad at myself for waiting as long as I did to switch.

The business model was that commercials provided the revenue stream that supported TV. That worked for years. However, over time this gradually changed. Now we pay truly huge amounts of money, and guess what? There are just as many, perhaps more, commercials than there ever was.

One thing that really bothers me about Hulu Live, that I don't know if happens on YouTubeTV, is that you can't always Fast Forward through ads. Most times when I pause a program for several minutes then return to the program (now several minutes behind live), when the next ad comes on, Hulu doesn't allow you to skip the ads. Even though I am paying for a subscription service, I am still forced to watch their ads. Sometimes there is a work around by selecting to record the show and then I can FF through some of ads. But I don't think it happens every time if the program is still live.

It’s annoying for sure but it’s worth considering how much networks are paying out: millions upon millions to broadcast the more popular sports, actors/actresses earning $1 million PER EPISODE, etc.

Yeah, everything is a money grab, state of CT, cable companies, streamers, pro sports, even UConn. Is it my imagination or is it worse than it's ever been? It will continue because we keep making the grabbers successful.

Some might want to try this free site. A tech guy I follow on FB mentioned it.

  • TV Garden (Unverified) TV Garden is a free streaming platform that offers thousands of live television channels from around the globe. Users can explore a wide range of categories, including news, music, documentaries, and more. The site features an interactive 3D globe interface, allowing viewers to select channels by country or category easily.

Is TV garden a legit streaming service?
  • Yes. TV Garden curates and indexes only freely accessible and publicly available streams from legitimate sources. No pirated content, no shady links. Plus, with no login required, you never share personal information or data—privacy-first streaming.

Seems like a lot of the USA networks/stations have caught up with this site and have done something to not allow their content to be shown. Some of the local channels are still there, and many of the foreign sites I use are available.
Still can watch my old favorite Mystery Science Theater 3000(at least for now)

Interestingly, I did a similar search in June, when I wanted to dump Comcast and look at streaming services. My two requirements were UConn WBB and, less importantly, the YES Network for the Yankees.

Using some AI, this document is what I finally created. It includes channels and pricing as of June 2025.

P.S. I went with YouTubeTV.
So, you can get all the games you would get on Hulu?
