A prolonged stay in the Big East will be a financial disaster. In another post, it has been shown how much other schools are pulling in in basketball alone. Louisville, for example, created 42 million for basketball only. How can you compare UConn's 4 million to that?

Most recent form 990 that I could find for the conference:

Obviously it’s from before we joined but it does give you a sense of the distributions. I think the differential is due to NCAA credits.

The problem with all of this is nobody understands the Northeast market from the B1G or ACC. Hartford is still a top 35 media market wedged between Boston and NY. These markets bleed together because there is so much fan overlap along the 84/95/91 corridors. The smart play for the B1G is grabbing BC and UConn which, along with Rutgers and PSU, locksdown the Tristate/New England metroplex. It’s exactly why ESPN broke up the Big East. It was cheaper to move some and pay up in the ACC while stranding the rest. Follow the money. ESPN is now being raided and the mega conferences are taking control back.

I don’t get the use of media markets for a state flagship that has no competition within the state. The entire state with its 3.6 million population, from Greenwich to Thompson, is our media market. The only question is to what extent UConn commands interest over the borders into other states - especially into NY where there are only 2 colleges which play big time college basketball. Given that UConn has a healthy 26% out of state enrollment - mostly from Massachusetts and NY - and lots of alumni in those states as well, there has to be a chunk of those markets that belongs to us.

Folks tune in to see ranked teams play...or big marquee games between national interest teams...and the networks are trying to create more of these match ups.
