You will need to mute Friday’s game

Ever wonder why you listen to the audio feed in TV games? Let me guess it's for information. If so, then the announcers who know the teams they're covering best are likely to provide the best info. It's not important that the commentators be "balanced," just that they tell us with accuracy what we're watching. But homers will be homers, and antipathy for all things UConn is rampant.
I only use the audio when Rebecca is calling the game. She is fair and articulate w/out pandering to the poor lesser mortals who comprise the Husky opponents. I never have the sense that she is rooting for our girls.
BUT best bet is to always mute the sound. We know our folks well enough not to need any help following. Silence is golden.

I was tempted to post a thread concerning how well the Dee Kantner thing was doing. I don't remember too many UConn games being on ESPN, before the tournament, so I was wondering if other fans had watched any other team's regular season games that were on ESPN (SEC, ACC, etc.) and whether or not she was still sharing her opinions on calls.

I would rather know who is refereeing. Usually a list shows up on line shortly before the games, but I haven’t been able to find it yet. Has anyone seen it yet?

I typically turn the volume down. I try the announcers, but when they detract from the game it's time to press mute. Except when there is some controversial moment then I delight in their buffoonery as they don't have an idea of what happened until the producer gives them a replay. I guess that's why they hired Kantner. She can give her opinion which is usually, "It looked like there was sufficient to call a foul in that circumstance." Very smart of her to add the words circumstance or situation because when she gets dinged for being inconsistent the reply is, "It's a different situation on this call."

Argh, Peck. What's the over/under on how long it takes her to mention Dawn, SC, Summit, or Tenn? I'm joking here, but ....
Add to that - how quickly in the Vandy game will she say that Blakes deserves to be the NPOY based on her scoring against tougher opponents than UConn faced this season? It's almost as if she's never watched Sarah Strong play. And if she has, she willfully ignores what is obvious to most everyone else.

I have found her both informative and knowledgeable.

(And she is no longer my least-favorite ref (retired or otherwise); that distinction now goes to Joe Vaszily. This guy just loves to blow his whistle, sometimes from across the court.)

Oooh. Good one.

She'll probably say it during the Uconn game.

She speaks up only when asked about a ruling. Some games she says nothing. I’ve actually found her to be informative when called upon.

I really wish they would transition Andraya Carter to color commentary for games, I know, she’s a Vol, but she has rapidly become one of my favorite announcers. I’d much rather listen to her than some of the other ones.
That would be a demotion for her at this point. She’s all over the ESPN studio shows

Dee Kantner is the rules analyst? Geeez

Wait, your take away was because Kanter is on the call as the rules ref to "mute"? I would take her any day (and twice on Sunday) over Peck or Antonelli who both make my ears bleed. I mean, I agree to go on mute but not because of Kantner as the first reason.

How Peck even has a job at this point is an utter embarrassment. She brings nothing to the table. Honestly, other than the Lobo team, all the regions will need to be on Mute for me. This is an absolute horrid set of assignments. So much for wanting to grow the game....

Hope this relates. Rene Montgomery. I thought she did a good job the couple of games I watched that she did. I like her personality. She was honest. I don't think she did "color takeover" like some do. Be glad to see more of her.

@HuskyNan at least she won't be refing!
That's a positive!
I did a detailed analysis last year of refs in the tournament over the last 15 or so years and, honestly, she was a lot better to us at the latter half of her career. I no longer feared her, at all.

I just did another analysis of FT differential. I was wondering if refs favored female coaches over male coaches. I looked at all D1 teams. I found no statistical difference. The strongest correlation, other than the obvious ones like foul differential, was scoring differential. It made sense that better teams would be able to defend without fouling and would tend to get fouled more. So I sorted by point differential and that is when it got interesting. While there was no bias over all D1, it does seem as though there might be bias for the very best teams. So while my personal observation didn't hold over all of D1, my perception of anti-male coach bias does seem to hold for the top teams. This implies that we will see it in elite eight games through the championship game.

In the event Rebecca Lobo and/or Ryan Ruocco (or anyone in their orbit) reads the Boneyard, here are some generic, non-pejorative questions I would love passed along to Dee for her to address during the game:

1. Referee Performance - How do referees improve their performance from game to game throughout the season?
2. Crew Composition - Who decides the composition of the three person crew for NCAA tournament games and what are the factors that go into that decision?
3. Referee Oversight - Who evaluates the performance of referees during the season, and when and how is it communicated? How does that change for the tournament?
4. SS, EE and FF Assignments - How important is it that assigned referees have prior in-season experience officiating games that involve participating teams, as opposed to having no exposure during the season. (I'm thinking seeing UConn for the first time.)
5. Game Adjustments - What do the refs talk about in their locker room prior to the game and, more importantly, do they collectively agree to make adjustments at half-time to whatever they decided prior to tip-off?
6. Official Reviews - How do they come to a decision - the majority rules or does it have to be unanimous?
7. Flopping or Embellishing - similar to reviews of possible non-observable flagrant fouls, should there be reviews during timeouts of players flopping or embellishing contact in order to draw fouls?
8. Offensive/Defensive Hand-checks - is there standardized criteria for evaluating hand-checks by both offensive players dribbling the ball (using their non-dribbling hand to ward of the defender) and defensive players brushing away the offensive player's non-dribbling hand?

Rebecca/Ryan, talk to your bosses. Dee can address these questions during official reviews or during time outs so as to not discuss during live play. There are four games with her before the Final Four. Two questions per game.

Go Huskies!

I'm inclined to agree, though she does have a penchant for loquacity.

Or better yet - How about NO color analyst. Just tell us what the call was and who the foul was on. Then silence.
Further, we don't need the third person EVER. I really don't care about the second grade teacher's neighbor of any player or coach.
You're a tough guy to please, trisailsin. But would you really like to live in a world w/out the Great Holly Rowe?

She would be much better after a crash course in English grammar.

I just zone in on the game that the voices are soft background noise.
