Certain cities, teams, regions or conferences leap to mind when thinking about championships or dynasties in sports. Let's name a few, some current, others only 20th century (pre-2000).
For example, college football, the SEC. But there was once Bud Wilkinson's Oklahoma powerhouse.
Ice hockey, the Montreal Canadiens had a couple runs, and the NY Islanders had one.
College basketball (20th century), UCLA and (gulp) Tennessee. NBA, the Boston Celtics.
Baseball (20th century), NY Yankees.
Got the idea? OK, now let's get current. Focus only on the past 15 years.
Today and tomorrow, two UConn basketball teams play for NC's. In the past 15 years, these teams have won ten NC's between them.
The other day, they had a nice ceremony to honor the 2013 Red Sox, now 3x champs this century. And they had reps of the Patriots (3x NFL champs), Celtics (1) and Bruins (1 more).
That's a lot of hardware for New England, perhaps the region in the country least recognized for sports excellence. The numbers don't lie. You want (to see) champions? Come to New England.
