So tonight Squirrel Nut Zippers opened for X. SNZ we’re very talented and a lot of fun. Just as expect. I didn’t know X. But it’s a very cool early LA punk band that integrates some rockabilly/ Jan & Dean sounds. Really impressed. Too often punk can just be noise. It’s not that. Epic xylophone solo and the guitar player has just a hollow body Gibson.

I've been fortunate to see Matthew Curry a few times in Cocoa Beach. Young bluesy guitarist. I first saw him at the Springfield Roots festival in 2014 when he was 19. He impressed me then and still does now. He plays the Midwest mostly but heads down to Florida 2 to 3 times a year and travels up the coast as well. He will be in Shirley MA in March of 2014.

So this was a pretty amazing show and experience. The whole place feels futuristic, like Space Mountain did in the 70s. While the visuals are stunning the real revelation was the sound. I really doubt that there is a better sounding venue. Just crystal clear.

You’re the reason I left the board.
What a day for GIFS not to be loading. I'll offer this to honor your temporary return

Ridgefield Playhouse has set up an excellent slate of jazz shows in early 2024. I saw Brad Mehdlau last month and got first row seats for the Bill Frissel Trio last night for just $45.

Played with his longtime drummer and my first show of his with a clarinetist/saxophonist. No bass.

It was my sixth-or-so time seeing him, who’s one of my favorite jazz guitarists because of the cinematic landspaces he builds. Great musician to simply close your eyes and listen.

I’m seeing Julian Lage at RP next month.

While out watching a cover band at a brewery several weeks ago, we had like 5-6 couples there. Under the influence of beer, we somehow bought tickets for all of us, plus another couple to see KC and The Sunshine Band at the Twin Rivers Casino in RI. I guess it will be fun.

Bought 2 for The National and War on Drugs show at Forest Hills for September
I really wanted to see this, but it's the night I get back from a three-day school camping trip, so I'd be asleep by 8. Saw The National in Westville last summer and the show was excellent.

KC and the Sunshine Band at a terrible venue (Ballys event center Lincoln RI). I was a death before disco teen, but still know the hits of course. Was rather surprised by the band. 4 horns, 2 keys, drums, percussion, guitar, bass, this was like a funk/fusion jam band. They extended every song lots of solos and they were good. Reminded me of The Atlanta Rythmn Section or a bargain Sly and the Family Stone.

Just got home from Julian Lage at Ridgefield Playhouse and wow, one of the best shows in recent memory. The landscape his music covers showcases his virtuosity, play and creativity in a jazz context. Blew me away. New albums dropped a few weeks ago, but he’s a live act for sure.

So, saw Zach Bryan Saturday night in Birmingham, AL.
We had a group from all over the area and some of the wives coordinated the trip as a way of getting everyone together.

This was my first "real" concert inside an arena in over a decade. I have definitely migrated to outside amphitheaters or festivals. Thank goodness this was a show where almost everyone stood the whole show. Seats were plenty wide but sitting in a seat at a concert isn't my style.

Men my age were certainly not the majority of the crowd.

Legacy Arena was packed- about 16k. Interesting building originally built in mid-70's and has gone through some face lifts. Place felt fresh and open. Hint, hint, Hartford.

Bryan put on a two hour show with no intermission and then an encore. Everyone of these girls dressed like cowgirls knew every word to every song. It was a sing along more so than a watching and listening show.

Bryan puts on a good show. His backstory of starting writing and singing while serving active duty in the Navy is neat. As a veteran who served in the Navy he was definitely being more productive with his off-duty time than I was. He is still only 27 and is playing Brooklyn this week and plays Foxborough over the summer as part of his stadium tour.

Band backing him is tight and they know their role.

Putting out a 34 song triple album as your major label debut is bold. American Heartbreak won several awards in both country amd rock.

Just picked up lawn tickets for the Outlaw Music Festival Tour at Bethel, NY featuring Dylan, Willie Nelson, Robert Plant/Allison Kraus and more. Got to see Fogarty at that venue two years ago and it's pretty awesome being where Woodstock was. Beautiful time of the year to be up there in July, so looking forward to spending a night up there too.
