If I count the 90 minutes of drinking I'm going to do in the train from New Haven, it's almost like a full four hour tailgate!

Except the lack of grill. I haven't figured that one out yet. Hobo fire, maybe?

Does anybody know what the intermediate fare means? Is that equal to peak, off-peak rate, or neither?

neither. it means that it's one fare all of the time.

Do you know what that fare is to and from New Haven?

Something like 25 each way. Maybe a little cheaper because it is the weekend.

NH to NY is typically 33ish round trip off peak.

Yeah I was gonna say, 25 each trip is wayyyy higher. Just went last weekend with my gf and I think two off peak round trip tickets were 65.

Fair. It is 21.50 each way peak of you buy at the station and 28 if you buy on the train. I don't ever take it from NH. Just know it is more than Milford.

Just checked the site, it's 34.50 round-trip off-peak. It has gone up a bit in the last couple of years but cheaper than parking in NYC.

I always drive in on the weekends. After taking the train back and forth all week sitting on those locals with all of the kids drives me bananas. :)

And $34.50 x the number of people you are bringing in makes parking look cheap.

Just to close loop - there's no such thing as "intermediate" fare to NY - it's either peak or off-peak. The intermediate fare is for anything in the middle (ie Bridgeport to Stamford)

Fair enough. But I would rather relax and drink some beers on the train than drive. And so would all of my friends.

Plus none among us can really be counted on to stay sober for the drive home. Usually someone's girlfriend or something can help us out but nobody is coming to this one so OH WELL.

They do have power outlets on the new trains... Maybe a george forman, and grill up a few brats? haha

I'm going to grab the 12:14 Yankee (er' Husky) Clipper from New Haven. Packing a 12 pack of cold ones, and some grilled up brats from home for our "Rail-Gate" on the trip down. GO HUSKIES!!

If I recall correctly from March, yes, they do.

I'll be taking that train as well just out of West Haven. I expect that we will see most people joining Ryan's tailgate on that train.
I know its posted widely on the MTA website but just a reminder for everyone to make sure you have any train beers finished and away before you step off the train to avoid a ticket.

they allow drinking on the trains???

Seems that way -

Few years back I was taking the trains through Scotland along the North Sea coast - beautiful scenery AND they have a beverage cart like the airlines - made train travel awesome.

MTA only. Not NY subway. However they did phase out the bar car in May.

If you are even the slighted bit nervous, then spike a couple Mountain Dews with Vodka and no one's the wiser.

Absolutely. Except on Christmas and Thanksgiving, I think. I regularly have a few beers on the way to NYC. You'll often see some of the investment banking kids in Stamford get on with a tall boy on their way back to the city.
