UConn rising junior linebacker Yawin Smallwood was named a fourth-team All-American by Phil Steele.

Smallwood led UConn with 120 tackles during the 2012 season. He had six double-digit tackle games as a sophomore including back to back 14-tackle efforts against North Carolina State and Maryland. Smallwood also had four sacks, forced two fumbles, 15 tackles for loss and recovered a fumble.

Smallwood, running back Lyle McCombs and cornerback Byron Jones were all named to the American Athletic Conference preseason first team, offensive tackle Jimmy Bennett and kick Chad Christen were third-pick pick while offensive guard Steve Greene, linebacker Graham Stewart and punter Cole Wagner were fourth-team selections.

Have we had guys even sniffing around any national All American lists recently? I'm guessing we have, just don't recall.

Surprised Wagner is only on #4 given how good he's been for us.

If theres 12 WRs better than 6'6" 225 lb 4.55 Brandon Coleman preseason projected 1st rd draft pick I put no stock in it and I usually think Phil Steele is pretty good!I believe Yawin Smallwood is 1st or 2nd rd material too..either biased,overlooked or ill informed!!

Smallwood is known and being watched he's on mel kipers big board top 5 at his position. unless he gets hurt or has a bad season he's a first round pick.

Also, If sio moore and or Trevardo make noise this season. smallwood would be a sure fire first round pick. Pro scouts already say he's better than those guys.

I think Yawin is a better football player than Sio was. However, I don't think Yawin will test as good as Sio when it comes to the combine and such. Better football player but doesn't seem like a freak athlete like Sio.

Smallwood was the best defender for UCONN last year on a very good defense. Anyone who watched the games would tell you that. I will continue to say I think he can be a monster OLB in the 3-4. Very underrated rusher, and he holds the edge in the run game.

There might be a slight bias if a teammate blows up - but professionals are going to scout Smallwood based on Smallwood - not what Moore or Williams do.

All american teams are about college production not pro potential. They don't care what someone's 40 time is on these lists.

First team ~ 3 out 4 are seniors (OSU Shazier is a Jr}
Second team ~ 3 out 4 are seniors (Bama's Hubbard is a Jr.)
Third team ~ 3 out 4 are seniors (Vol's Johnson is a Jr.)
Fourth team ~ Only 1 is a senior (WKU's Jackson), 2 are Juniors (USCw Pullard and Yarwin) and 1 is a Soph (Ole Miss Nkemdiche).
