XL improvements?

The CRDA website states:
"This facility will operate on both event and non-event days, providing a vibrant new lounge space for patrons with a view of the arena bowl."

And the Hartford Buisness Journal:
"The venue would operate seven days a week, even when events aren’t taking place at the XL Center, Freimuth said."

By nature, I hate to be a pessimist, but one situation I always am one is with anything to do with CRDA.

My guess is it will be a ghost-town on non-event days. And they know it. But will be fully staffed to continue to drain max money from the taxpayers of CT. The CRDA way.

Kind of like the Teletheatre near Bradley

Sure. Not disagreeing you can keep a venue open while actively repairing it. Truth be told, inconveniencing fans by choking access and rerouting them is a great way to make them "feel" the pain of improvements. Unfortunately, I don't think that's the case here. This feels more like a F-em statement towards patrons.
I was there in person tonight and bravely walked the entire length back and forth. My MBB season tickets are right there. It is in no way a "F-em statement towards patrons". Anyone trying to present it as such is a dishonest clown.

I have yet to see it but it’s gotta be a mess no? Sure for smaller crowds it won’t be a huge issue but for sellouts I gotta believe it’s going to cram the concourse up more.

Yes, it's not as wide so some patience will be needed at halftime and game end.

God forbid that building ever needs to get evacuated quickly.
It's safer in the current configuration I would think. In an evacuation, those old portals could have created a dangerous bottleneck.

plus probably charging the AD for the privilege, either directly or indirectly.

In the need of an evacuation there should never be people going in two directions from any point. There are four exits around the perimeter, get to the closest one.

It could bottle up leaving a game or at halftime bc people will travel in both directions, at the end of game people aren’t looking for nearest exit, but the one closest to where they’re parked. In a real emergency your first thought should be to get out by any means necessary.

OVG is the best in the biz when it comes to arena development. They are single-handedly responsible for the Kraken in Seattle, and when the NBA returns as well. Same for NBA in Vegas, it will mostly be because of them. If anyone can make the XL Center what it needs to be, it is them. If the XL Center fails with them in-charge, then quite frankly no one can make it work.

In any evaluation of how successful the XL Center is, we would have to eliminate the by above market rent paid by the University of Connecticut for men’s basketball, women’s basketball and hockey. In essence, that is the state paying itself. If you eliminate the 40,000 per game +3 dollars per ticket the university pays, the XL Center isn’t even close to operating at the $2 million deficit that the CDRA financial show. Based upon that, I think it’s pretty clear that the arena has outlived its useful life.

But, it’s not my tax dollars supporting it.

Can't say I know a lick about what you're talking about... but if true, this could be a very good thing for Hartford. Status quo isn't working. We need the big dogs in here if XL is going to be viable.

Nor mine. But would it help if the place wasn't a dump? Taking the UConn equation out of it, what other in-door option can host top concerts/events in the area? Mohegan? Springfield? At the end of the day, a nicer 15K XL trumps at least Mohegan (I don't really think MassMutual is a threat?) for a lot of events because of the capacity. Especially since it's easy for concert tours for example to schedule between Boston and NYC as they have to drive through town anyways. "If you build it, they will come"/"takes money to make money" are cliches but true.

OVG portfolio: OVG360 Clients
I actually saw the Leiweke brothers (Tim and Tod) speak at a sports conference a few weeks back -- both very successful lifers in sports, definitely good at what they do. Take a look at their resumes. Tim founded OVG with Irving Azoff (arguably the #1 most powerful person in music industry and in live events). If you want concerts to come to your arena, Irving Azoff is the guy you want in your corner. This connection only helps Hartford/XL Center. And just proves my earlier comment -- if they can't make it work, no one can.

XL is already listed under their portfolio. Are things moving faster than we thought?

“OVG already manages the XL Center on behalf of the CRDA. OVG took over management following its November 2021 acquisition of Spectra, a venue management and hospitality company.

At the time of the deal, Spectra was nearing the end of a multiyear XL Center contract. That contract with OVG has been extended to 2025 due to the venue’s prolonged shutdown during the COVID-19 pandemic, Freimuth said.”

Am I wrong to wish it was OVG saying it is serious negotiations with the state instead of state saying it's in serious negotiations with OVG?

I’m not sure that it does. First, remember nicer is a relative term. A lot of things could be nicer than the current XL Center and still not be desirable. The second is I’m not sure the difference between Mohegan Sun Arena and the XL Center is material, or even desirable, for most events. A commonly heard reprise for UConn playing in the XL is that it’s necessary to keep the facility open. If that’s true, then it makes no sense to keep it open because essentially the state is merely paying the $2 million deficit and the UConn subsidy out of two separate pockets. It is a distinction without a material difference.

If both arenas are the same quality, would a musical act rather sell 15K tickets or 7K tickets for the same night? That is my point. I think there is a market for the XL Center, it just can't feel like a 50-year-old arena.

I understand the point, I’m just not sure how accurate it is.

First, that’s a pretty big if regarding quality. I think it would take a very, very significant amount of money to make the XL Center “equivalent” to its competitors if that’s even possible.

If a musical act is only going to sell 5000 tickets, then it would rather be in a 7000 seat arena than a 15,000 seat one. The latter would be a morgue.

Mohegan Sun is a 10,000 seat facility, not a 7000 seat facility. It’s also a 10,000 seat facility that is surrounded by numerous eating options, numerous hotel rooms, and adequate parking all connected.

You forgot about the biggest plus. The casino can afford to overpay the musical acts I enjoy the intimacy at Mohegan, but the arena itself is nothing special

Mohegan Sun can take a loss getting acts into that arena. They took a loss getting the CT Boat Show into their convention area.

True, it is a de facto loss leader.
