Xavier Post Game Thread

I have never seen a ref call something off of a replay that wasn't called on the floor, and in my opinion that's BS! If they called a foul on Malachi and upgraded it to a flagrant upon review, that's one thing, but there was no foul call on that play. Fanta and Donny said Hurley was challenging the out of bounds call. (And BTW, no, it was not a flagrant foul!)

It's like reviewing a catch/no catch in football and the ref says "oh by the way there was a facemask there."

Mabye there's something in the NCAA Rule Book specifically about flagrant fouls, but if it's not called on the floor, it shouldn't be allowed to be a new call based on a replay review.
I don't know what they were looking at. It didn't look like a flagrant foul on Smith, but if you're going to call it on Smith why didn't the Xavier player get a flagrant as well, hitting Smith in the face and drawing blood. Just a bizarre call all around. If it was hockey it would be a 4 minute minor on the Xavier player.

Between the last two men's game and the 2nd half of the women's game against Tennessee, over the past week UConn fans have been treated some beautiful & great basketball.

I still don't get the flagrant on Malachi. He took a shot and shoved the guy with his eyes closed to keep from getting runover and further damaged. If pushing a guy like that is a flagrant, Hurley could submit about a dozen videos of Mullins getting pushed like that off the ball on defense. Like I said, I just don't get the call.

I don’t know about you guys but I liked the uptempo pace of the team tonight. Something I haven’t seen much in a long time. Maybe trend in this direction going forward depending on the opponent. I also sensed our guys enjoyed this type of style.
I noticed that too and commented during the chat. Seems the past two games they started pushing the ball to get some easier transition baskets. It's not only fun to watch but it's also better balanced basketball.

Smith played 15 minutes and I can't recall one positive play. That was a bogus tech but even that didn't go his way. I guess he had 2 rebounds but he seems lost out there. Not sure why Hurley waited until 2 minutes left to put in Millender. Seemed like a good opportunity to give him a look. Of course he air balled a corner 3 but would like to seem him get more opportunities in a game like this.
I do not understand why folks ask rhetorical questions like that. Hurley didn’t put Millender in earlier to “give him a look” because Hurley doesn’t need a look to know that Millender isn’t getting Smith’s minutes. It’s fine if you aren’t sure that Millender couldn’t do better, or even if you think Millender could do better, but you really don’t think it’s obvious why Millender is only getting garbage time minutes at this point (barring injuries or a lot of foul trouble)?

Lot of good things to talk about and most of it has already been said. Nice all around performance on both ends of the floor.

One strange observation was Reibe was probably fouled about 4 to 6 times throughout the game and didn't get many calls. I thought Reed also got fouled a number of times including that travel where the guy had his arms all over him. Granted it was one of those pull the chair out from under him, but also grabbed him by the arm and pulled him backwards as well. Which I think in most cases is considered a foul. I also thought Stewie got fouled the number of times without getting any calls.

I don't mind allowing the physical play as long as it's the same on both ends of the floor. But watching a replay of the game, Xavier does a lot of grabbing and bumping while UConn doesn't seem to grab and clutch as much as our opponents do.

Obviously the officiating didn't factor in the outcome of the game. I'd rather have less fouls than more, but it was just annoying watching it at times. Props to the huskies for filling it up even with a lot of non-calls.

Love Ross. Not taking much out of Xavier quitting in the second half lol
I actually think we took the foot off the gas more than they let up. We built the lead in the first half and coasted.

Nice win. Looks like Hurley has hit the nitroglycerin button on his Ferrari.

Hmm. KP Offensive efficiency ratings go up when we run good offense and make the shots. Make it make sense. It’s almost like the analytics measure important things.
We ran plenty of good sets over the course of the season. The shots are just finally falling. But you can’t tell me two games ago we couldn’t win a natty and now we can all of a sudden, which is what the analytics say.

Yes, the lack of a transition game is what was holding this team back. Hope it continues

The Yard is a funny place. They win impressively tonight and at this point this post game thread is just 4 pages.

They struggled in a win against Providence a couple games ago, and it was 23 pages.

Apparently there was just not much to complain about.

I really want Demary to take over. He’s an efficiency demon at this point, please increase your shot volume to take our offense to new heights.

I'm with you to a degree, but sometimes that makes him less efficient. He's cooking, let him cook.

I know that's been said before, but that's not really abnormal. There's more to talk about and more to argue about. Everyone saying "wow we're awesome" doesn't go very far.

Biggest takeaway from the game for me is that Xavier has someone who is actually named “All Wright.”
And his brother's name is Always Wright. He was at URI the 2 seasons before this. Their parents have a sick sense of humor.

Nothing to complain about here. Superb game. Ross had a great stretch in the 2nd half. This was never in doubt and that’s what you want in a home game against a meh team. Sadly I remember seeing UConn lose in OT against Xavier at the Charleston Classic years ago (at almost 1:00 am while I was on a broke toe). So it’s disappointing that they aren’t more competitive.

Xavier quit in the first half. And I don't mean letting up a little when the game gets out of hand, which is the right thing to do. I mean blatantly not caring from the opening tip.

I like wins as much as anyone, but as a fan of college basketball, tonight's game was a travesty. Xavier could not have shown less interest in this game if they had played in jeans. I have seen a lot of blowouts across college basketball this year, but this was the first time I was in the building for one. You could see the indifference in the body language of the Xavier players during dead balls and timeouts. How many times did Karaban just walk to the rim without anyone challenging him? I have seen more defensive effort in middle-aged pickup games than Xavier showed tonight.

When the players are getting paid, they should play harder, not shuffle around the court for 40 minutes like Xavier did tonight. This game was a total embarrassment for the sport, and there have been a lot of games like it this season. I don't know what is happening in college hoops (or football, where this also happened a lot), but someone in charge better get to work fixing it or the fans will stop caring too, and that will be the end of the party for everyone.

It may just be a result of controlling the boards better.
I think there is more to it. I wouldn't be surprised if Hurley had them practicing more transition and early offense basketball the past couple weeks after getting tired of too many grinded out close wins.

I just don't think they've had a lot of offensive balance in January and the last two games seems to point to more transition and taking it to the basket before the defense gets set. Whatever the reason, I like it.

It had me thinking of Majestic Mapp and his brother Scientific Mapp. I-Perfection Harris will also always have a place in my heart.
