Here is a link showing the normal times for peak leaf viewing in Maine. In late September, I agree with others that you will need to visit Northern New England. I prefer either Vermont due to the brilliant red colors of the sugar maples or Maine. Maine is the best option for that time IMO and could be combined with some great lobster and blueberry pie. We went to a place called Union River Lobster Pot in Ellsworth Maine and had great lobster and pie and the wife had a blueberry martini. We also camped which made the trip inexpensive.

I was conceived accidentally on a beach in Lubec so I have been told.

Agree with most of this except the misspelling of the word lobstah. Oh, and be aware that in Maine lobstah rolls are cold and in CT they are piping hot. The places to go in CT for this delicacy are Fords, Abbotts, or Costello's in Noank, Lobstah Landing in Clinton, and many other places that board members here may recommend.

No matter how you spell it, they are delicious. I'll eat them either Maine style or CT style but prefer them CT style. I have been to the Landing in Clinton many times and always good. Abbotts was good as well. One of the best lobstah dinners I ever had was from the Menemsha Fish Market on the Vineyard. Nothing fancy as we ate off wooden spool tables but the seafood was as fresh as it could be. Honorable mention to Cousin Maine's Lobster truck. I was not aware of their Shark Tank start but I had their roll at a firework display in Orange Ct and was very impressed.

as someone who has never lived in Connecticut except 4 years of UCONN, telling someone from Wyoming to go visit West Hartford or New Haven is ... braindead.

What is New England?

If its a car full of young men ... YES ... Foxwood or Mohegan Sun. But the flavor of your state is more found in Shore towns or Litchfield County. On game night ... its too far to direct someone to West Hartford or New Haven. Hartford will be the best

It's almost like you have no idea how close East Hartford, West Hartford, and Hartford are.

You'd think the names would give it away.

.-.
But screw West Hartford, it's generic affluent white suburb. You can get that anywhere in VA
I'm sure nothing in Litchfield county would remind them of Virginia.

Nautilus/Mystic and clam shacks, that's what a CT visit should be about.

Is this Cowboy ever coming back to the thread?

you're advising a bunch of guys from Wyoming ... to go to New Haven. or West Hartford. My eyes are rolling.

Tailgate ... maybe meet some locals. But they have never been to New England. Why a upscale suburb? or a city 45 miles away.

did your parents take you on long drives when you were a kid?

I 84 exit to the Storrs campus is more foreign to Wyoming than any upscale white suburb in VA. I drove cross country from Boston to LA with my UConn bff. We raced through SD and entered Wyo on the way to Jackson Hole and the tip of Idaho/Utah.
trust me: there's nothing that looks like a New England seacoast, Litchfield County, Vermont, Western Mass, in that flat barren state with mountains. Cows. There is a West Hartford in most every eastern state.

You really should read all of the posts... especially the first one in any thread. You'd probably realize that they are from VA.

It's the Boneyard, Jake

West Hartford Center is 20 minutes to the stadium tops and offers a plethora of eating, drinking and entertainment options for the night before or after the game, all in walking distance. Saying it is a bad idea is like telling someone going to NYC that they shouldn’t stay near Times Square because they are going to a Yankee game one day.

Once the game is over and they head out to other parts of New England they can do other things. Hartford has options too, but West Hartford won’t disappoint most adults. It is nice, safe and offers lots of options. Acting like West Hartford is far away from the the Rent is just silly.

Read the OP….this is what he asked for.
A couple of friends and I are driving up from Virginia to see the Cowboys play the Huskies in September. Any advice regarding accommodations, dining, and tailgating?
I gave him what he asked for.

This interaction has reminded me why I stopped posting. Thank you for that.

I didn’t advise them to go to new Haven. My eyes are also rolling.

I didn’t advise them on sight seeing. He didn’t ask about that. And we only know they are driving up from Virginia. We don’t know that any of them are from Wyoming.

Richard.

Why bother to understand the context to a post when you can jump in the middle of a thread and criticize a posters for not suggesting better sights to visit when they didn’t post anything about sightseeing??

The Poke alum asked about dining, tailgating, and accommodations and @Pudge throws out Litchfield county.

Nothing better than the Cornwall Bridge on game day!!

@Pudge if you want to argue with the places people suggested, quote them, not me.

Fine, stay in Hartford and see what a dying New England city looks like.

I hope you and your friends have a great trip and enjoy your time in CT @DCPoke

I googled UConn and University of Wyoming and ended up down a wormhole that led me to discovering UCon, Idaho. Not too far from Laramie. Grab me a t-shirt next time you get out that way. :)

That is A LOT to try to pack into a week, and I don't really think you'll get any sense for any of those places. I'd just pick 1 and commit...cant really go wrong with any IMO.
A lot indeed, but think about how big a state like Wyoming is alone, or along with its surrounding states. The entire New England area they're traveling probably fits one state... We live in a much faster pace life around these parts than folks that have hung out in those parts.

@DCPoke - Enjoy the ride and sights with your buddies. Safe travels. Lots of nut jobs riding on these roads lately.

Not disputing that you can see it. But you won’t have any experience. A good Maine lobster roll experience is a few hours... have a few drinks, watch the boats come in and unload, enjoy the roll (not as good as CT style), have a whoopie pie.

Parkville Market in Hartford is better than anything West Hartford has to offer. In fact, I had a "good lobster roll experience" there last night. A proper Connecticut lobster roll.

And if you like fake New England charm it is the place to be. You want something close that has real restaurants head 20 minutes south to Main Street Middletown. Interesting vibe, good food Wesleyan is interesting to see. A few Local brews. Celtic Tavern is very good. ElPulpo has good Spanish/Mediterranean fare. Fiore is good for Italian

keeping with the travelogue musings here, some neighborhood buds (20s) recently returned from their spring road trip (they put up aboot 7,000 miles last fall, first heading down south to check out the caves, then heading up north to the badlands. a new truck can do that to ya). this time, spokan was the halfway point, aboot 9,000 miles in all. they were mesmerized by their potato experience. heading into Idaho (aboot 14 times the size of Connecticut), they hit that stretch of road running two, tree hundreds of miles with nothing but spud fields as far as the eye can see, and learned that, universally, everyone was quite happy aboot their role in growing them, ie 'i grow food to feed the world!,' 'i fix the machines that grow the food to feed the world!,' 'i serve lunch to the folks who grow the food to feed the world!,' and so on, and so on, and over and over again.
shiny, happy people, and quite the opposite of the crankfest seemingly in the air around our coastal northeast big cities lately.
wyoming is way cool, too. i bought a sweet pair of boots in laramie a few years back. now, what you don't hear much of out that way, is 24/7 nonstop talk aboot restaurants, che che beer, or coffee beans blessed by the dalai lama. refreshing, as well as good advice when giving local travel tips, cuz them folks put up a drive of an hour or two much like our 10-20 minute trip to the super.
and oh, the stocked beer for the road trip crew was pbr. widely available.

(and yes, they're right aboot 'feeding the world.' something like 13,500,000,000 pounds per year)
i would highly rec our wyo pals to buzz down to nl/mystic/stonington harbors, or over to newport harbor, or up to bahston harbor, since there ain't much of that out their way. the most complex machine ever made is a daily job for groton folks, and iffn you listen to thems who do it, they're amped aboot that. clydes mill over there is pretty cool, too.

and now, todays potato market report;
National Potato and Onion Report (usda.gov)
prices moving up. buck fiddy a pound for the big bakers in the super. the world luvs them, and like almost everything else, we got lots.
and thanks, yankee homeboy luther burbank ('His heart was fathomlessly deep, long acquainted with humility, patience, sacrifice. His little home amid the roses was austerely simple; he knew the worthlessness of luxury, the joy of few possessions. The modesty with which he wore his scientific fame repeatedly reminded me of the trees that bend low with the burden of ripening fruits; it is the barren tree that lifts its head high in an empty boast.'), for inventing the russet up there in Massachusetts, and a pantload of other produce that we luv.
'This large, brown-skinned, white-fleshed potato has become the world's predominant potato in food processing.' wiki.
paris? what they got, besides folks who don't shower much? been there, done that, smell u later. see the USA!

And I forgot Eli Canon’s. Must be losing it. If there is a beer brewed they probably have it on tap. Great wings and it is beyond funky. Ask to sit out back if the weather is good. You won’t miss it but if you do just ask anyone for Eli’s. And it should be then. Plus you can go across the street and grab an Irish Car Bomb at NORA cupcakes for dessert.

That’s all fine, but if you want a nice hotel, good food, great pizza slices, bars, stores, bagels, coffee, movie theatre, all walkable and a piece of cake ride to the game, just stay in West Hartford. They can go to the coast, the Northwest Hills, the casinos etc. when the game is over and they leave the area. You can call WeHa fake New England if you want, but prosperity doesn’t mean fake. It usually means comfortable.

I sure hope I don’t go to a Wyoming football board someday and ask for travel adivice. If those guys are like some of you, they’ll send me to a Motel 6 fifty miles outside Cheyenne because that’s where real cowboys stay.

Actually the Inn at Middletown is quite nice. If you like golf (or Apples) Lyman Meadows is nearby too. Just sayin’. And maybe 25 minutes from the stadium...

Accommodations: If you're looking to walk for meals/entertainment, then Delamar in WH is very nice, and within walking distance of everything you'd need. If you're driving everywhere and just looking for cheapish accommodations there are plenty of places to pick from in East Hartford, Glastonbury, Windsor, Windsor Locks that are convenient. Where you stay really depends on how you're travelling, and what you'd like to do while here.

my suggestions were clearly qualified based on how they expect to travel, and if they want to walk to everything.
Parkville market is awesome. I’m glad they’re expanding. In and of itself it’s not a reason to stay in Hartford. You suggested they stay in downtown Hartford. Parkville ain’t downtown. Neither is Dillon. Downtown is virtually dead on a Saturday night.

@DCPoke
If you really want the feel of New England, it’s right here in this thread. A bunch of people making assumptions about you and your trip, telling other people their suggestions are crap, while not knowing anything about you, what you want to see, what interests you, and what you want to get out of the visit.

Welcome to the elitist, land of the know-it-alls. Where the state motto is “I’m right, everyone who disagrees is an idiot.”

Enjoy your stay.
