WSJ published today:

"This week, an NCAA-commissioned report used a female athlete to illustrate the advantages women’s college basketball has over men’s in marketing players.

That star is Paige Bueckers (“beckers”), the do-everything UConn guard who last season became the first freshman to be named the AP National Player of the Year. Given her large social media following and high-profile team, she could earn $1 million a year in endorsements, according to an analysis by a firm that connects athletes with sponsors. That is likely more than she would earn if she were able to turn pro now."

Really interesting read....

The article suggested women basketball players might have more potential earnings than the men in college, because they stay for four years, not leaving after one or two. Also that Paige had more Instagram followers than the combined total for all four starting lineups in the men's Final Four, and that coming into this year she is probably the most well known college basketball player, male or female.

If she is making that much money, then she might decide to play for a 5th year at UConn. Everyone that played in the 2020-2021 season was granted an extra year of eligibility so why not stay and make an additional million, about $750,000 more than what she would make as a top rookie in the W.

Except that she could make that $1M in endorsements as a first-year pro.

Just a heads up, everyone...

For big national newspapers like the NYT and WSJ, check with your local library to see if they provide digital access for free with your card.

Thanks for the advice. You made me realize that I can access the WSJ through my card at the New York Public Library. Consequently, I just finished reading the Paige Bueckers article. Quite an interesting article. Thanks again.

On top of the WNBA salary and there’s a good chance she could still be within contract of some of those deals when she graduates if they were multiple years

Who was the person on this board who said that these athletes would make no money and that only the top celebrities/athletes make anything off endorsements/sponsorships?? Lol

Then you have to ask the question: what purpose is the scholarship if someone can make that kind of money going to college. It might be viable for less talented student athletes but the mega athletes do not need them. It comes down to selecting a school because of he coach and what they could learn from the program. Business is business.
