I have always thought nine teams was the right size for a conference which was the old ACC. 16 conference basketball games and 8 conference football games. The home and home conference slate for basketball is the most attractive for attendance and developing rivalries. Schools in the ACC used to see UNC and Duke at home every year, which is pretty attractive. Not happening any more, which may mean that a school may only have one marquee conference game on the home schedule. Why buy season tickets?

9 is good.

18 would be next best--you basically split the conference into two, and have a 16 game round robin schedule (maybe two cross games) and then meet some others in the post-season.

It's like two conferences, but one collects the money. That's probably the way they should go if conference expansion keeps up.
